Humboldt 4th in NCC boys golf

Cade Birdsell fired a two-round total of 77 to lead the Humboldt boys' golf team to fourth-place in the North Central Conference meet in Mason City on Monday, May 12.

Dawson Sleiter finished 14th overall with an 80. Parker Sleiter had 81, Carson Olson 84, Cyler Cirks 87 and Mack Harklau 87.

Clear Lake won the team title with 303 strokes. Webster City had a 314 with Algona third at 321 and Humboldt fourth at 322. Iowa Falls-Alden shot a 341.

The Wildcats will focus on competing in a Class 3A Sectional tournament in Spirit Lake on May 14.

MELISSA K. COLLINS

Melissa “Mimi” Kay Collins, age 61 of Livermore, passed away on Tuesday, May 6, 2025 at her home.
Melissa, the daughter of Nelson and Arlys (Borg) Hendrickson, was born March 18, 1964 in Fort Dodge. She was the youngest of nine children. Melissa attended Humboldt High School and graduated in 1982. On Nov. 28, 2014 she was united in marriage to Joseph Collins at The Little Brown Church in the Vale in Nashua. Melissa was a believer in Jesus Christ and enjoyed being involved in church activities, especially VBS. She also loved her Emmaus family.

IRENE SCHWINT

Irene Schwint, born on Sept. 26, 1935, in Rockwell City, passed away peacefully on Jan. 11, 2025, in Zephyrhills, FL. In accordance with her wishes, cremation rites were observed. A Celebration of Life will be held from 1 -3 p.m. Saturday, May 17 at the Mason-Lindhart Funeral & Cremation Service in Humboldt. Burial was in Union Cemetery, Humboldt. www.masonlindhart.com
Irene was the daughter of Walter and Edna Wendt. She graduation from Rockwell City High School in 1953 and later attended Iowa Central College in Fort Dodge. In 1954, she married Don Zuck and welcomed two children, Steve and Tracy. Although that marriage ended, Irene found love again with Richard Schwint, whom she married in 1961.
Together they had two sons, Brian and Ronald. Richard’s passing in 1991 was a profound loss for the whole family.

Wildcats win 4 events in NCC boys track

Humboldt won four events and placed third in the team scoring of the boys’ North Central Conference track meet held on May 8 at Clear Lake.

Elliot Carlson won the long jump with a leap of 20-feet seven and one-half inches while Tyler Carlson won the high jump at 6-foot-3.

Humboldt’s 4x800 relay claimed first in 8:37.78. The relay was comprised of Justin Ash, Jackson Flaherty, Chase Flaherty and Mason Van Pelt.

The 4x400 relay of Jackson Dodd, Van Pelt, Elliot Carlson and Chase Flaherty clocked 3:28.19 for top honors.

On Thursday, May 15, Humboldt will travel to Nevada to compete in a Class 3A state qualifying meet. Field events begin at 4 p.m. with running events at 4:45 p.m. The top two placewinners in each event, along with the next eight performances statewide, will advance to the state meet in Des Moines on May 22-24.

Wildcat girls 3rd in NCC track

Humboldt totaled 74 points and placed third in the girls' North Central Conference track meet held on May 8 in Iowa Falls. Clear Lake won the team crown with 194 points. Algona was runner-up with 153. Webster City was fourth with 69, along with St. Edmond at 69, Iowa Falls-Alden with 60, Hampton-Dumont-CAL at 56 and Clarion-Goldfield-Dows last with 51.

The Wildcats had several top three finishes in the meet. Brynn Malo was third in the 800-meters in 2:26.74 and Aubry Fisher was second in the 1,500-meters in 5:16.72. Fisher was also second in the 3,000-meters in 11:14.27. Humboldt's distance medley relay was second in 4:32.14.

The Wildcats will now gear up for the state qualifying meet in Nevada on Thursday, May 15, starting at 4 p.m. The top two finishers in each event, along with the next eight best performances statewide, advance to the state meet in Des Moines on May 22.

ELAINE M. DAVIS

Elaine M. Davis, 79, formerly of Humboldt, passed away on Sunday, May 4, 2025 at the West Bend Health & Rehabilitation Center in West Bend surrounded by family.
Elaine was born Jan. 9, 1946 in Fort Dodge, the daughter of Milford and Arlene (Sundeen) Hoff. From her toddler years until the time she moved to a care center, she lived on the family farm west of Thor. She attended Humboldt Schools, graduating from Humboldt High School in 1964. The day after graduation she took a job in the office at Gunder Manufacturing. On April 25, 1970, Elaine was united in marriage to Virgil J. Davis. Elaine took time off from her career to raise her boys, Michael and Steven, before returning to Gunder Manufacturing and managing the office for numerous years.

ELDON L. MONSON

Eldon Monson, 96 of Livermore, passed away on Tuesday, May 6, 2025 doing what he loved to do, farming. Funeral services were held on Saturday, May 10 at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Livermore. Burial took place at Union Cemetery of rural Livermore.
Eldon Lyle Monson, the son of Martin William and Mabel (Carlson) Monson, was born on March 22, 1929 in Livermore. He graduated from Livermore High School in 1947. Eldon was united in marriage with Averill Signe Oppedahl on Nov. 24, 1956 at Lake Lutheran Church of rural Goldfield.
Eldon was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church where he served in many officer positions. He was a member of the Good Luck Motorcycle Club of Algona. Eldon enjoyed riding his Harley Davidson in his younger days, and took pride in keeping his vehicles and farm equipment clean, and his farm weed free. Most importantly, he always stressed being faithful to the Lord in your words, thoughts and actions.

HUMBOLDT - Humboldt Rotary Club recognized the top 20 students in the senior class at Humboldt High School at a banquet held on April 30 at Zion Lutheran Church in Humboldt.

It marked the 64th annual Top 20 honors banquet the Humboldt club has held. The Rotary club was chartered in 1925 and through the years has awarded many scholarships and loaned funds from the Lindhart Trust to worthy students.

Many students have benefitted from over $604,101 in low interest loans since the club began managing the Lindhart Trust in 1972. In 2021 the trust funds were transferred to the Humboldt Community School District Foundation with instructions to offer two $1,000 scholarships to Humboldt High School graduates that exemplify the Rotary Motto of Service Above Self.
