HUMBOLDT - The emergence of electric scooters in the community has created a new set of issues when it comes to safety, according to Humboldt resident Barry Ellis.

Ellis and his wife, who reside at 301 5th Street North in Humboldt, spoke during open forum at the Humboldt City Council meeting on Monday night, June 16. Ellis lives near the T intersection with 3rd Avenue North, which has a stop sign illuminated by a red flashing light. The intersection is a busy street crossing with a sidewalk entering into Taft Park on the west side of the street.

“Just recently I witnessed a kid on a scooter drive across the street into the park. He didn’t stop. A white car, lucky it wasn’t going too fast, laid at least a seven-foot skid mark to avoid running him over,” Ellis said.

Carol Joan Wier McBurney, 93 of Donalsonville, GA formerly Humboldt, passed away Tuesday, April 29, 2025, at the Southeast Alabama Medical Center in Dothan, AL. Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, June 21, 2025, at 10 a.m. at Faith United Methodist Church in Humboldt. Inurnment will take place at Union Cemetery in Humboldt. Carol was born on June 23, 1931 in Humboldt to Frank and Marie Wier and attended Humboldt Schools graduating in 1949. After graduation she attended Iowa Methodist School of Nursing becoming a registered nurse after graduation in 1952. Carol married the love of her life, Lloyd McBurney in 1951.

Rodney G. Shadle, 66, of Humboldt, passed away on Monday, May 26, 2025 at his home in Humboldt.
Rodney Gene Shadle was born on Jan. 27, 1959 to Dorman and Ethel “Bonnie” Shadle. He attended Humboldt Schools and graduated from Humboldt High School in 1977. Rodney worked with his dad at Shadle Salvage until his parents’ passing in 1990 and 1991. He then worked for Corn Belt as a night watchman until his facility was closed. He later worked at Frigidaire in Webster City for a short time, then spent many years employed at Hardees until his retirement. Rodney enjoyed Louis L’Amour books. He could talk for hours about wars, battles and the weaponry used in them being a Medieval Times enthusiast.
Rodney is survived by his sister and brother-in-law Pat and Dave Stein of Dakota City and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, brother “Dean” Shadle and sister-in-law Pam Shadle.
