HCSD Board of Directors meet, approve handbook changes

During their regular meeting on June 9, the Humboldt Community School District Board of Director’s discussed sharing agreements, handbook changes, and bill payments.

First on the docket for the evening was the superintendent's report from Superintendent Murray, later in the evening the board gave their superintendent evaluations during a closed session.

During his report, Superintendent Murray updated the board on staffing, the summer food program and facilities updates.

According to Superintendent Murray, the resignation of Josh Telschaw as technology assistant created an opening for the role, which will be filled by Britini O’Leary. O’Leary will take on the title as K-12 Technology Integrationist for the upcoming school year.

Regarding the Summer Food Program, Superintendent Mur-ray reported that there was a good turnout for the first week of service.

ROBERT M. SCHAUMBURG

Robert “Bob” Schaumburg, age 73, passed away peacefully on May 30, 2025, at UnityPoint Health-Iowa Lutheran Hospital in Des Moines, with his family by his side.
Robert Merton Schaumburg was born Oct. 27, 1951, in Fort Dodge, to Joseph Simon William and Myrtle Matilda (Haas) Schaumburg. He grew up in Eagle Grove, with his three brothers, William, Merlin and Martin, and three sisters, Joanne, Louann and Denise. He graduated from Eagle Grove High School in 1970.
Bob worked in the Fareway meat market after graduation and took classes at Iowa Central Community College in Food Marketing Management. He later opened “Bob and Eddie’s Quality Meats” in Humboldt. He co-owned and operated it for several years before selling it to pursue a career in sales. Bob had the gift of gab and was kind and generous to everyone he met. He made many friends over the years selling plumbing and HVAC supplies for Brigg’s Incorporated until he retired in 2017.

JAMES F. SHELGREN

James F. Shelgren, age 87, of Rolfe, passed away on Sunday, June 1, 2025, at Trinity Regional Medical Center in Fort Dodge.
James Franklin Shelgren was born July 29, 1937 on the family farm near Gilmore City. He was the son of Harold and Liliet (Hansen) Shelgren. Jim was raised on the family farm and graduated from the Rolfe High School in 1956. He continued his education at Buena Vista University in Storm Lake, earning a Bachelor’s Degree in Business. Following college, Jim entered the U.S. Army where he served until his honorable discharge in September of 1963. On Aug. 15, 1964, Jim was united in marriage to Helen Lowrey at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. The couple settled in the Rolfe and Gilmore City area where Jim farmed. Helen passed away in 2007, and Jim later moved into Rolfe.

DONOVAN LERDAL

Donovan “Don” Lerdal, 77, of Ankeny passed away peacefully, May 27, 2025.
Visitation will be held from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. on Friday, June 20, 2025, at Memorial Services of Iowa (4208 N. Ankeny Blvd.). A memorial service will follow the visitation at 6:30 p.m.
Don was born April 16, 1948, in Fort Dodge, to J. Donovan and Mabel C. (Kleve) Lerdal. He attended Boone Valley High School and graduated from Northwest Missouri State University. Don loved being a farm kid and would say there was no better place to grow up than rural Iowa.
Don served a six-year term in the Iowa Army National Guard. He worked the majority of his adult life as a real estate appraiser. Don met his wife, Deborah DeGroote, in 1973. Don and Debbie were married April 24, 1976.

William L. “Bill” Dencklau, 68, of Dakota City, passed away unexpectedly on Monday morning, June 2, 2025 at the Humboldt County Memorial Hospital in Humboldt.

Wildcat girls edge Forest City, 9-8

The Humboldt softball team moved their season record to 7-5 overall by edging the Forest City Indians, 9-8 in Forest City on June 19. Adalee Nolting pitched an eight-hitter for the Wildcats. Claire Dieleman and Elsie Hubbell both went 3-for-4 at the plate. Hubbell drove in five runs.

A four-run seventh inning lifted No. 7 (Class 1A) ranked Fort Dodge St. Edmond past Humboldt, 8-2 in a North Central Conference softball game in Humboldt on June 18. Humboldt slipped to 6-5 overall, 4-4 in NCC action.

Top Lynx in 8 innings, 7-5
In a classic Humboldt vs. Webster City softball game in Webster City on June 16, the Wildcats scored two runs in the top of the eighth inning en route to a 7-5 victory over the Lynx at Dave Hilton Field. The triumph improved the Wildcats' record to 6-4 overall, 4-3 in the North Central Conference. Humboldt pounded out 10 hits as Adalee Nolting went 3-for-4 at bat with two runs batted in. She also pitched all eight innings from the circle.

Humboldt baseball team in pair of 13-2 victories over Webster City

The Humboldt baseball team pushed their season record to 16-4 overall by whipping the Webster City Lynx, 13-2 on June 16 in Webster City and on June 18 in Humboldt. Originally scheduled as a doubleheader in Webster City on June 16, the second game was postponed due to a thunderstorm and was moved to Humboldt on Wednesday, June 18.

Humboldt played at Fort Dodge High School on June 17 at McNeil Field and fell 22-7 to the 14-8 Dodgers in non-conference action.

Humboldt's next game is Monday, June 23, at home in a conference doubleheader against Algona starting at 5 p.m. Humboldt hosts Spirit Lake on June 24. They'll host Mason City on June 26.

Jaxon Heinz wins George Lee golf title

Jaxon Heinz finally etched his name in the George Lee Memorial Golf Tournament record books by winning the 74th annual event at Humboldt Country Club last Saturday, June 7.

Heinz shot a three-under-par 105 to claim his first tournament title. The former Humboldt High standout who has been a challenger in the tournament in recent years, won a three-hole sudden playoff to edge Scott Spiers of Grundy Center.

Heinz finished with rounds of 35-34-36 for a 69 total. Spiers, who won the tournament in 2023, shot 34-36-35 for a 69. To determine a winner, the pair were both tied after shooting on holes eight and nine. When they went back to hole eight, Heinz birdied to edge Spiers.
