Coming off a state runner-up finish and a district title in 2024, Humboldt head football coach Derrick Elman fully expects a carryover from last year into the 2025 season.

lman begins his eighth season at the helm of a Wildcat team that returns plenty of speed and size from last year, where Humboldt won Class 3A District 2 with a 5-0 record and went 11-2 overall, falling to Dubuque Wahlert in the state championship.

“Every year in pre-season, it’s about how these guys come together,” Elman said.

“Last year’s group jelled so well. We talk about leaving the jerseys in a better place when you graduate. Last year’s seniors for sure left it in a better place but it’s not just about the program, but what the program does and how the kids build off of what the group before them did,” Elman said.

Waldorf back as head coach, 9 letterwinners return

A familiar face is back to lead the Humboldt High School volleyball team.

Kara Waldorf, who led the program during the 2021 and 2022 seasons, compiling a 48-20 overall record, 13-1 in the North Central Conference and a league title in 2021 takes the reins of a squad that returns nine letterwinners from last year’s team that went 23-10 overall, 7-0 and first in the NCC. They advanced to a regional final before bowing to eventual state champ Western Christian of Hull.

“It feels great. I have had so much fun being back in the gym with the girls and the other coaches. It’s a different feeling but a great feeling. There’s so much excitement right now,” Waldorf said.

Joel Hoogland begins 1st season as head coach

By Phil Monson

Joel Hoogland begins his first year as head coach of the Humboldt High School cross country team with enthusiasm and optimism.

Hoogland, who has spent the last two years as an assistant coach under Spencer Ross, takes over the reins of a Wildcat program which returns 11 letterwinners from last year.

In 2024, the Wildcats girls placed third and the boys were fifth in the North Central Conference meet. They placed ninth and 11th, respectively, in the state qualifying meet with no entries advancing to state.

“The goal for the girls’ team has to be getting down to the state meet in Fort Dodge. It’s only an 11-mile drive so there’s no reason why we can be there,” Hoogland said.

Meyer, Townsend in 2nd year on FD swim team

Addie Meyer (left) and Morgan Townsend are members of the Fort Dodge High School girls’ swim team this fall.

Addie Meyer and Morgan Townsend, a pair of sophomores from Humboldt, are starting their second seasons on the Fort Dodge High girls’ swim team.

“I am looking forward to this swim season. I’m hoping to be in the 50 and 100-yard freestyle events, the 50 breaststroke and some relays. The Fort Dodge girls are all very nice and supportive,” Townsend said.

“I am very excited to start my sophomore year swimming with Fort Dodge. I would love it if I could swim the 50-yard freestyle and 100-yard butterfly, along with some relays,” Meyer said.

“I would also like to try the 50-yard backstroke, that I grew to love over the summer. I love getting to know and forming friendships with the Dodgers’ swim team,” Meyer said.

The Dodgers are again coached by veteran mentor Ashley Beaumont.

The squad opens at home on Sept. 2 against Marshalltown.
