DONA R. JONES

With heavy hearts, we remember Dona Rae Jones (née Strachan), who passed away on Aug. 26 2025 after a courageous battle with cancer. Dona was born on May 29, 1938 and raised in Humboldt. She was a cherished sister and friend to Mona and David. After graduating from Iowa State University, she married Lee Stephen Jones in 1960, and together they raised three children, Doug, Linda and David, whilst also pursuing her career as a registered dietician.
After Lee’s passing in 1987 and for the past 32 years, Dona found strength and joy with her partner and traveling companion, Keith Naeve. Together, they explored the world, creating lasting memories. For over two decades, Dona and Keith hosted annual Thanksgiving trips to the Caribbean and Costa Rica ,with their families eternally grateful for those moments.

DALE E. KRAFT

A funeral service for Dale Kraft was held on Saturday, Sept. 6, 2025, at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Renwick. Burial followed at Elmwood Cemetery near Renwick. The service was live streamed on St. Paul Lutheran Church’s Facebook Page.
Dale Ernest Kraft was born to Fred and Ruth (Bowers) Kraft on Sept. 14, 1934, in Boone township, Wright Co. Iowa.
Dale was baptized and confirmed at St. Paul Lutheran Church and was a lifelong member there. He was educated in the Renwick school system, graduating in 1953. In January 1954, Dale joined the Air Force. He received basic training in Texas and spent most of his career at Castle AF Base in California. He was crew chief on B47’s then later worked on B52’s. Dale loved to watch airplanes fly and would try to figure out what type it was.
He was united in marriage to Lois Lehman at Eagle Grove Evangelical Lutheran Church on Dec. 15, 1957. This union was blessed with three children.

PHYLLIS A. NELSON

Phyllis A. Nelson, 89, of Humboldt passed away on Saturday morning, Sept. 6, 2025 at the Westview Care Center in Britt following a lengthy illness.
Phyllis was born Oct. 22, 1935 in Hazelton, the daughter of John H. and Marie L. (Shima) Dibble. She worked many years as a secretary for Hoag’s Plumbing & Heating until she retired. She was united in marriage to the late Erland Nelson on Sept. 16, 1983. The couple made their home in Humboldt. Phyllis enjoyed sewing, baking, bingo, crafting and gardening, (Their garden was big enough to feed the town of Humboldt). Our mother could sniff out a Dairy Queen within a 100 miles as strawberry ice cream was her favorite. She was a member of the VFW Women’s Auxiliary in Dakota City.

LOUISE E. PIPER

Louise E. Piper, 86, of Garner, passed away peacefully, surrounded by her children and loved ones, on Wednesday, Sept. 3, 2025, at her home.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m., Saturday, Sept. 13, 2025, at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Garner with Rev. Scott Kozisek officiating. Burial will follow the luncheon at St. Olaf Cemetery in Bode.
Visitation will be held from 4 to 6 p.m., Friday, Sept. 12, at Cataldo Funeral Chapel, 160 E. 4th St., Garner and will resume one hour prior to services at the church on Saturday.
Memorials may be directed to St. Paul Lutheran Church, Blue Ribbon Foundation at the Iowa State Fair or to the donor’s charity of choice.

2nd half lifts Lions over Humboldt in battle of rated 3A teams, 23-7

In a battle of Class 3A top-five ranked teams in Humboldt Friday night, Sept. 5, the No. 3 Clear Lake Lions outscored No. 4 Humboldt 17-0 in the second half for a 23-7 victory in non-district action at Mason Maach Field.

Humboldt's lone score came at the 7:10 mark in the second quarter when quarterback Jackson Flaherty threw a 3-yard pass to Chase Flaherty in the end zone to give the Wildcats a 7-6 lead after Karson Rubel kicked the extra point.

Clear Lake quarterback Jaxson McIntire rushed for two touchdowns and passed for another to lead the Lions. Christian Dunning kicked a 25-yard field goal late in the third quarter to regain the lead at 9-7 with 2:06 on the clock. The Lions preserved their win by recovering a fumble and intercepting a pass in the fourth quarter to halt any Humboldt opportunity.

Cats sweep Lions, win Humboldt Invitational

The Humboldt Volleyball team opened North Central Conference play on Thursday night (Sept. 4) by sweeping the Clear Lake Lions by scores of 25-4, 25-18 and 25-5 in a match at Clear Lake.

Humboldt hosted their own tournament on Saturday, Sept. 8, and rolled to a 4-0 record to win the round-robin event. The Wildcats defeated Carroll Kuemper, Emmetsburg, South Hardin and Fort Dodge to improve their overall season record to 7-1.

Humboldt returns to action on Thursday, Sept. 11, when they host Algona in conference play. The Wildcats play in the Cedar Falls tournament on Sept. 13.

Malo winner at Webster City, HHS girls 3rd

Brynn Malo was the overall winner in leading the Humboldt girls' cross country team to a third-place finish in the team scoring of the Webster City Lynx Invitational cross country meet on Tuesday, Sept. 2, at Links Golf Course.

Malo finished first with a time of 19:37.5 to pace the Wildcats. Aubry Fisher was third in 20:08.0 and Avery Fisher fourth in 20:08.1. Macey Rodgers ran 22nd in 22:45.5 as Humboldt finished with 85 points. Gilbert won with 48. Ballard Huxley was second with 52. Roland-Story was fourth at 120.

The Humboldt boys finished 16th in the team standings, won by Gilbert with 17. Ballard Huxley had 111 and Waverly-Shell Rock was third at 127.

Henry Kramer was 18th in 17:53.7 to lead Humboldt. Carson Chambers was 82nd in 21:21. Ike Fowler ran 85th in 21:36 and Miles Zeman clocked 22:11 to place 93rd. Obed Antonio was 100th in 23:23.

Next action for Humboldt is the Estherville-Lincoln Central Invitational on Sept. 9.

JO ANN GEORGE

Jo Ann George, 90, of Humboldt, passed away on Monday afternoon, Aug. 25, 2025 at the Humboldt County Memorial Hospital in Humboldt.
Jo Ann was born Aug. 11, 1935 in Osceola, Iowa the daughter of Eugene and Lillian (Woods) Simpson. She moved with her family at an early age to Rutland and attended Humboldt Schools. She was united in marriage to Jerry L. George on February 1, 1952 in Blue Earth, MN. The couple made their home in the Humboldt area where they raised their family. Jo Ann handled the books for her husband at Jerry’s Conoco and later worked at Martin Home Interiors. She and Jerry owned the Fireside Restaurant, later the Bootery and The Image. Jo Ann especially enjoyed time with family and friends and time spent sewing and knitting.
