CYNTHIA A. PRATICO

Cynthia Ann “Cindy” (Westfall) Pratico, 72, of Humboldt, passed away on Monday, April 20, 2026 at the Iowa Specialty Hospital in Clarion.
Cindy was born March 22, 1954 in Storm Lake, the daughter of Keith Hugh and Catherine Marie (Bauman) Westfall. She was raised and educated in Humboldt and worked at A&W for many years. She attended a convention in Hawaii where she met Robert Pratico on the beach. Bob followed her back to Iowa and the two were married here. The couple made their home in Kauai and Cindy worked as a manager for a Subway Restaurant. They lived there for many years and returned to Humboldt as his health started to fail. Family was very important to Cindy and she enjoyed her times going to coffee with friends and her church group.

EDWARD H. HECKMAN, JR.

Edward Harry Heckman, Jr., 93, of Humboldt, died Saturday, April 4, 2026 at Iowa Methodist Hospital in Des Moines.
His wishes were to be cremated.
Memorial services were held on Friday, April 24, at Oak Hill Church in Humboldt.
Surviving is his son, Mark Heckman of Humboldt; grandson, Doug (Anita) Heckman of Ames, granddaughter, Lucy Swanson of Rogers, AR, and six great-grandchildren, Raeghan, Gavyn, Hayden, Paisley, Brecken and Gianna and many nieces and nephews in Oregon.
He was preceded in death by his parents, all five of his siblings and wife, Barbara (Kendall).

IRENE L. CURRY

Irene L. Curry, 91, of Bode, passed away on Monday, April 20, 2026 at the West Bend Health & Rehabilitation Center.
Irene LaVonne Curry was born to Herman and Laura (Gravlund) Mitsven on April 4, 1935. She graduated from Bode High School in 1952. On June 30, 1952, Irene was united in marriage to Howard Curry at St. Olaf Lutheran Church in Bode. She started working as a bookkeeper for the Bode State Bank in 1968 and continued bookkeeping for area farmers after the bank was sold retiring last December after 58 years. Irene along with Howard enjoyed dancing and together made Lefse. She was known as the “Lefse Grandma” to her grandkids and great-grandkids.

Deputy Bennett receives Law Enforcement Victim Services Award


Deputy Erin Bennett with the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office accepted an award recently from United States Attorney for the Northern District of Iowa, Lief Olson. Bennett was recognized for her work on a recent case involving a vulnerable 18-year-old girl who was being sexually abused.

The United States Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of Iowa commemorated National Crime Victims’ Rights Week (NCVRW) from April 19–25, 2026.

This year’s NCVRW theme is Listen. Act. Advocate. Protect Victims, Serve Communities. The weeklong initiative promotes victims’ rights and honors crime victims and those who advocate on their behalf.

“This week gives us a chance to thank the people and organizations whose tireless work comforts victims of crime in Iowa, giving them support, life-saving services, and, most importantly, hope,” said United States Attorney Leif Olson.

As part of National Crime Victims’ Rights Week, April 19–25, 2026, United States Attorney Leif Olson announced the recipients of awards for outstanding work in service to victims of crime.
