Memorial Day observed Monday, May 25

Traditional Memorial Day services and remembrances will take place next Monday, May 25, to honor the deceased, especially those who died in service to our country. Here is information on some of the area services: Humboldt/Dakota City There will be flag raising ceremonies at the local cemeteries at sunrise. The Humboldt County Courthouse will also have its avenue of flags. A short parade will be held going west down Sumner Avenue. Entrants will line up at the Humboldt County Law Enforcement Center at 9 a.m., with the parade beginning at 9:15 a.m. There will be a salute to the dead at the Sumner Avenue Bridge at 9:25 a.m., with Memorial Day services beginning at Bicknell park at 9:30 a.m. The Honor Guard will provide observances at local cemeteries and the courthouse according to the following schedule: 10:20 a.m., Union Cemetery 10: 40 a.m., Corinth Cemetery 11 a.m., Indian Mound Cemetery 11:15 a.m., St. Mary’s Cemetery 11:30 a.m., Humboldt County Courthouse grounds in Dakota City. Livermore, LuVerne, St. Joe There will be a program beginning at 9 a.m. at the Livermore American Legion, with a guest speaker from the U.S. Marine Corps. Following the program, the Livermore American Legion members and Sons of the American Legion will conduct memorials at the Livermore Catholic Cemetery at 10 a.m., Union Cemetery at 10:20 a.m., St. Joe Cemetery at 10:40 a.m. and LuVerne at 11:55 a.m. There will be a community potluck dinner at the Legion following. Bode The Bode American Legion Post No. 524 and Auxiliary will be having a program at the Bode American Legion Hall beginning at 9 a.m. (Please note the time change, as this is one hour earlier than in previous years.) Jess Tepner will present a video featuring images from Honor Flights he has chronicled. The program will conclude with a firing of a 105mm howitzer on loan from the Algona National Guard. Renwick Renwick will be having a Memorial Day observance at 10 a.m., at the Veteran’s Memorial Park. Surviving World War II veterans from the Boone Valley area will be recognized. Tracy Gugger, a 1983 Boone Valley graduate and U.S. Navy veteran will be the featured speaker. Gilmore City The Gilmore City American Legion and Auxiliary will be having a program on Monday beginning at 10 a.m., in the Wolcott Center at Gilmore City-Bradgate Elementary School.
