Humboldt man killed in gyrocopter crash

One Humboldt man was killed and another man injured following the crash of an experimental helicopter at a Humboldt County residence early Sunday evening. Larry D. Erickson, 58, Humboldt, died from injuries sustained in the crash, which occurred shortly before 7 p.m. Sunday evening, Aug. 9. Michael M. Chapman, 65, was transported by Air Ambulance to Des Moines, where he was being treated for injuries sustained in the crash. According to the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office (HCSO), an E-911 call was received at 6:57 p.m. on Sunday evening to respond to a helicopter crash at 2045 K Road, 1.5 miles north of Dakota City. Responding emergency personnel found the wreckage of a small experimental gyrocopter in the front yard of Chapman’s residence. Read more about this story in this week's Humboldt Independent newspaper.
