Humboldt man killed, two others injured
One Humboldt man is dead and two others received injuries as a result of a single-vehicle accident that occurred early Monday morning, Sept. 26, in the 1100 block of Birch Avenue, about 2-1/2 miles southwest of Ottosen.
According to the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office (HCSO), dispatch received a report of a single-vehicle accident on Birch Avenue. The accident was reported at 6:36 a.m.
An investigation at the scene determined that a 2005 Buick LeSabre was northbound on Birch Avenue when it failed to navigate a slight curve to the west and entered the east ditch. The vehicle struck a culvert, went airborne and landed in a cornfield. The vehicle flipped and rolled before coming to rest on its wheels in the field.
The driver of the vehicle, Christopher Barnes, 27, of Humboldt, was ejected from the vehicle and pronounced dead at the scene. A front seat passenger, Joseph Holobovich, 37, of Humboldt, was transported by ambulance to the Kossuth Regional Health Center in Algona and was later airlifted to a Des Moines Hospital for treatment of serious injuries. His current condition is unknown.
A back seat passenger in the vehicle, Jacob Bastian, 30, of Humboldt, was also transported to Kossuth Regional Health Center in Algona, where he was treated for minor injuries and was released. No occupants in the vehicle were wearing a seat belt.
The Iowa State Patrol is handling the accident investigation.
The HCSO was assisted at the scene by the West Bend Ambulance, Palo Alto County Health System Ambulance, Humboldt County Emergency Management, West Bend Fire Department and the Humboldt County Medical Examiner.
