North Polk holds off Humboldt, 26-17

In a battle of ranked unbeaten teams, the North Polk Comets held off the Humboldt Wildcats, 26-17 in a non-district clash on Mason Maach Field in Humboldt on Friday night, Sept. 20.

Humboldt, 3-1 on the season, got a pair of touchdown passes from Coen Matson and a 29-yard field goal from Karson Rubel. Matson passed two yards to Chase Flaherty in the second quarter as the Wildcats trailed 14-10 at halftime. Matson later teamed up with Flaherty on a 38-yard scoring pass with 5:59 to play in the fourth quarter.

North Polk sealed its win when quarterback Nathan Feldmann ran 68 yards for a score with 4:56 left in the fourth quarter.

Humboldt begins Class 3A District 2 play at Hampton on Sept. 27. North Polk (4-0) begins 4A action at Des Moines North on Sept. 26.
