Lynx grind out 21-14 victory over Humboldt

Webster City executed its clock-consuming, ground-oriented offense to perfection and held off Humboldt, 21-14 in a Class 3A District 1 football game in Humboldt on Friday night, Sept. 26 on Mason Maach Field in Humboldt.
It was the district opener for both teams as Humboldt slipped to 2-3 overall, 0-1 in district play. Webster City improved to 2-3 and 1-0.
Webster City senior running back Jaxon Griffith scored on runs of two, three and three yards to lead the Lynx, who held a 14-7 halftime lead.
Humboldt's first score came with 5:07 left in the first half on a 69-yard pass from Jackson Flaherty to his brother, Chase Flaherty. Karson Rubel's point-after was good to tied the game at 7-7 at that point. Cash McIntire scored on a 10-yard run with 6:39 left in the game to pull Humboldt within seven at 21-14.
A roughing the punter penalty on Humboldt with 2:38 left in the game kept the ball in Webster City's hands and the Lynx were able to run out the clock and secure the victory.
Humboldt will play their next two games on the road. They will visit Algona on Oct. 3 in district action. The Wildcats visit MOC-Floyd Valley on Oct. 10 before returning home to host Sioux City Heelan on Oct. 17. Humboldt's regular season finale is Oct. 24 at Sioux Center.
Webster City will host Sioux Center on Oct. 3 and visit Heelan on Oct. 10.
In other district action on Friday night, Sept. 26, MOC-Floyd Valley edged Algona, 14-13 and Sioux City Heelan beat Sioux Center (28-15).
