HCDA report highlights expansion

Sometimes a look beyond retail sales and leading economic indicators is needed to assess whether a community is thriving, striving or slowly in decline. According to many economic indicators, Humboldt County is booming in a quiet, yet consistent way, showing very positive signs for growth in the future. On Monday, Humboldt County Economic Development Director Alissa Reinholdt presented a biennial report to both the Humboldt County Board of Supervisors and the Humboldt City Council. In sharing the report of the Humboldt County Development Association, the group that Reinholdt oversees, there were many positive signs to show that business recruitment and retention as well as industry expansion is on the way up. Reinholdt said that from new business recruitment to existing industry expansions, the capital investment made in Humboldt County over the past two years has exceeded $4 million.

New surgeon coming to town

Financial matters and tax issues dominated discussions by the Humboldt County Memorial Hospital (HCMH) Board of Trustees during their regular monthly meeting on Monday. On the revenue side, the hospital’s search for a general surgeon may soon be over. HCMH Chief Executive Officer Jim Atty reported that Dr. Jaime Giraldo, a physician specializing in general surgery and wound management, will begin practice at HCMH in mid-January. Giraldo is a member of the Trimark Surgery Group and has been a general surgeon at the Trinity Regional Medical Center in Fort Dodge since 2011. He will be available for consultations and general scheduled surgeries at the Humboldt County Memorial Hospital. Atty said Dr. Giraldo should benefit hospital operations on a number of fronts, including increasing the amount of surgeries performed in the operating room, as well as basic out-patient surgeries that HCMH patients can have here, without having to travel.

Strong solvency ratio for Humboldt

The Annual Report for the Humboldt Community School District 2011-2012 school year is now complete. During Monday night’s regular monthly meeting of the board, Humboldt School Superintendent Greg Darling handed out copies of the report and reviewed some of the highlights in the document. Darling noted the district had a solvency ratio of 14.69 percent on June 30, 2012. The district carryover or unspent balance was $2,853,870. “Our spending authority is good. When you are in the negative, the state will come and talk to you about making changes,” Darling said. “When you figure in the building project we’ve done the last few years, the solvency ratio looks pretty good,” Darling said. “Ideally, your target solvency position should be five to 10 percent and we’re at 14.69.” “The school district is a multi-million dollar business. From $14 million to $20 million,” Darling said. Darling said the district’s insurance costs went down because of lower claims.
