Council expected to hike water/sewer rates

Humboldt city residents are likely to see an increase in their city water and sewer rates after July 1, 2013, to reflect the cost of living. During Monday night’s Humboldt City Council meeting, Humboldt City Administrator Aaron Burnett proposed and the Humboldt City Council agreed to a bump set at the Consumer Price Index (CPI) level for 2012. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics that figure for the past 12 months is 2.2 percent. “When we did the last rate increase for sewer and water the idea was to tie it to the Consumer Price Index to ensure that every year we have a smooth trend to match inflation. “We haven’t put it in place because when we passed the last rate change we didn’t know the cost of the water plant improvements and new operational costs. We now have a better idea and where we are at right now is where we need to stay in terms of costs,” Burnett said.

Drill team wins Hoopla contest

The Humboldt High School Drill Team, coached by Melanie Clark, won the large school Hoopla contest at the 2013 Iowa State Dance/Drill Team Contest Friday, Nov. 30, in Des Moines. HHS finished with 270 points followed by Sioux City North with 262.5 points, and Storm Lake with 256 points. The team also received a Division I rating in the Class 10 Pom contest. Safety improvements to local road sought

Renwick agribusinessman Harold Trask said he is as concerned as anyone about saving taxpayer money, but when improvements involved public safety issues, changes need to be made. Trask spoke to the Humboldt County Board of Supervisors Monday morning at the board’s regular weekly meeting. His concern was the safety of the intersection at County Roads C-54 and P-66 in southern Humboldt County. Trask said his daughter-in-law, Gidget Trask, was involved in a T-bone collision at the intersection in April 2011, and a car-semi collision Friday at the intersection resulted in the death of a Bode man and injuries to a Fort Dodge driver. “I know it’s not my responsibility or the county’s on how people drive, and I don’t want the county spending more money than it has to, but ask yourself if it was your wife, or son or daughter involved in a collision there, wouldn’t you want that intersection to be as safe as possible?” Trask asked.

Richardson given hero's welcome

More than 900 flags lined Highway 169 (13th Street) on both sides of the road from the south city limits to the north city limits last Friday, Nov. 30, to honor Sgt. Joseph A. Richardson, who was killed in action in Afghanistan on Nov. 16. Larry “The Flag Man” Eckhardt, of Little York, IL, came to Humboldt City Hall last Thursday afternoon, and asked if the city wanted flags. Volunteers spent the early hours of Friday morning installing the flags. A large contingent of volunteers helped remove the flags Saturday afternoon, following funeral services at St. Ceceila's Catholic Church in Algona and burial at Indian Mound Cemetery south of Humboldt. Bank Iowa takes on Support Our Troops campaign

People can help to support local military men and women by donating items or cash for care packages being put together by Bank Iowa employees. Bank Iowa locations in Humboldt and Gilmore City are collecting items for the care packages through Dec. 28 as part of a “Support Our Troops” campaign. Those care packages will be sent to troops from our area who are currently serving. Bank Iowa employees have donated funds to cover the postage. Bank Iowa is exhibiting several interesting military pieces from the Humboldt County Historical Museum. They are currently on display at the main bank location in downtown Humboldt. The items range from a Civil War bugle, uniforms from all branches, medals, various hats, ammunition, war ration books and even a mail cart used in Livermore to haul mail from the train to the Post Office.

Wildcat girls, boys fall at Algona Bishop Garrigan

Bishop Garrigan of Algona took a pair of North Central Conference games with visiting Humboldt Tuesday night (Dec. 4). The host Bears defeated the Wildcat girls by a 33-27 final score and the boys' contest also went to the Bears by a 52-47 final.Erica Lane scored 10 points, Lauren Friesth nine and April Jones six for the Humboldt girls. Jaxon Heinz made 18, including 11 in the final two minutes of the game, to pace the HHS boys. Brady Ross was next with eight and Michael Orness had six.The Wildcat girls are now 1-3 overall on the season, 0-3 in NCC play. The Wildcat boys slipped to 1-2 overall, 0-2 in the NCC. Humboldt will now return home to host Eagle Grove (Dec. 7), Fort Dodge St. Edmond (Dec. 11) and Clarion-Goldfield (Dec. 14).See the Humboldt Independent Newspaper for complete story and photos.

Wildcat wrestlers win own tournament, roll at Estherville, 63-15

Humboldt crowned three champions and claimed the team title of the Humboldt Invitational Friday night (Nov. 30). The Wildcats totaled 249 points to beat out runner-up Atlantic(220). Aplington-Parkersburg (218), LeMars (160), Pocahontas Area (157), Maple Valley-Anthon-Oto (127), MFL Mar Mac (113) and Hinton (96.5) round out the scoring.Colton Schnetzer (152), Tyler Rutz (160), and Reed Dreyer (195) won individual titles for the Wildcats. Dylan Hendricks (285), Nikko Wheeler (182), Adam Mickelson (170), Austen Gargano (126) and Kylie Zender (113) were runner-up.The Humboldt High School varsity wrestlers opened the new season with an impressive 63-15 dual meet victory at Estherville Thursday night (Nov. 29).Humboldt will compete in the East Sac quad on Tuesday, Dec. 4. Panther boys win 1st game, 44-21

CWL earned its first win of the season Tuesday night (Dec. 4) by turning back Clay Central-Everly, 63-56 in conference action at Royal. The Panthers are now 1-3 on the year. See the Humboldt Independent Newspaper for complete stories and photos.Panthers fall to GTRA, 63-56You can probably bet the Corwith-Wesley-LuVerne boys will be working on shooting this week. Panther head coach Mel Haler says free throws were the difference in his team’s 63-56 setback to Graettinger-Terril/Ruthven-Ayrshire last Friday night (Nov. 30) in Corwith. The Panthers, 0-3 overall on the season, shot 30 percent from the field and missed 12 free throws in falling to the Knights. Josh Hilbert scored 15 points, Esden Carroll had 12 and Derek Studer and Jared Haler each had 10 to pace CWL.

Wolverine boys rip CCE, 65-20

WEST BEND – Jordan Buhs scored 20 points while Jason Zinnel made 17 and Jesse Zinnel 14 to power the West Bend-Mallard/GC-B boys past Clay Central-Everly, 65-20 in Corn Belt Conference basketball on Nov. 30 in West Bend. Cole Banwart added six points while Nolan Dahlhauser, Jack Fehr, Nathan Grimm and Kurt Banwart each had two. Buhs nailed six 3-point baskets while Jason Zinnel had three and Jesse one. Jesse was 3/5 from the foul line and Jason 2/4. WBM/GCB 53, GTRA 37 The Wolverines and Graettinger-Terril/Ruthven-Ayrshire opened conference play with the Wolverines pulling out a 53-37 triumph at Ruthven on Nov. 27. Jordan Buhs and Jason Zinnel each scored 21 points to power the Wolverines.North Iowa 74, WBM/GCB 51 Defending state qualifier North Iowa raced out to a 27-5 first quarter lead and never looked back in posting a 74-51 triumph over WBM/GCB in non-conference play at Buffalo Center on Nov. 26. Jesse Zinnel scored 19 to power the Wolverines.

WBM/GCB girls in 39-30 victory

WEST BEND – West Bend-Mallard/Gilmore City-Bradgate evened its girls’ basketball record at 2-2 on the season with a 39-30 victory over Clay Central-Everly on Nov. 30 in West Bend. Kayla Banwart and McKenzie Grimm led the Wolverine scoring with nine points each. Emily Jobst (11) and Blair Montgomery (10) paced the Mavericks. The Wolverines also got eight from Cassie Gearhard, six from Ashley Schmidt, five from Courtney Bargmann and two from Sarah Mader.GT/RA 41, WBM/GCB 40 WBM/GCB fell to GT/RA in a close contest on the road on Nov. 27. The Knights posted a 41-40 victory over the Wolverines. Kayla Banwart scored 19 points to pace the Wolverines, who trailed 17-14 at halftime. Sarah Mader was next with seven and Harrison Schmidt added six.North Iowa 52, WBM/GCB 44 North Iowa withstood a third quarter rally by the Wolverines and held off West Bend-Mallard/Gilmore City-Bradgate, 52-44 in non-conference basketball at Buffalo Center on Nov.
