Humboldt boys fall to Algona in overtime, 57-55

Algona rallied from 13 points down early in the fourth quarter and went on to upend Humboldt, 57-55 in overtime in a North Central Conference boys' basketball game in the Humboldt gym Tuesday night (Jan. 29).Bryan Larson scored 19 points and Jaxon Heinz made 18 to lead the Wildcats, who slipped to 12-4 overall, 11-4 in the North Central Conference. Humboldt also got six points from Brady Ross, four from Jaylen Heinz, three from Alex Nelson and two each from Matt Pogge and Ben Jacobson.Algona (6-11, 6-9), which tied the game at 48-48 at the end of regulation, was led by Sawyer Frideres with 24 points and Luke TerHark with 18. The pair combined to hit seven 3-point baskets for the Bulldogs.Next action for Humboldt is Friday, Feb. 1 at Webster City. The Wildcats visit Iowa Falls on Feb. 5 and host Clear Lake on Feb. 7.

COOK OF THE WEEK - SUPER BOWL

The teams are chosen and the countdown has begun. Super Bowl XLVII will be played on Feb. 3. The first Super Bowl was played on Jan. 15, 1967, at Memorial Coliseum in Los Angles, CA. The Green Bay Packers beat the Kansas City Chiefs 35-10 and Bart Starr, the quarterback for Green Bay, was named the most valuable player. This year’s game will be played in New Orleans between the San Francisco 49ers and the Baltimore Ravens. HHS boys defeat Clarion-Goldfield, upended at St. Edmond

Humboldt's boys got back on the winning track Friday night (Jan. 25) by turning back Clarion-Goldfield, 51-47 in a North Central Conference basketball game at Clarion. The Wildcats, 12-3 overall on the season, 11-3 in the NCC, were led in scoring by Jaxon Heinz with 16 points and Bryan Larson with 15. Brady Ross made 11, followed by Michael Orness with seven and Matt Pogge with two. Clarion-Goldfield slipped to 6-12 overall, 4-11 with the loss.The triumph helped Humboldt stay in the running for the league title and likely gave the Wildcats a No. 1 seed in the Class 3A District Tournament later in February. Pairings will be released in another week.Humboldt's 10-game winning streak came to an end Tuesday night (Jan. 22) in the Fort Dodge St. Edmond gym as the host Gaels held off the Wildcats, 45-42 in a North Central Conference game. Bryan Larson scored 14 points, Michael Orness made 12 and Jaxon Heinz and Brady Ross each had 8 for Humboldt.St.

HHS girls hold off Clarion-Goldfield, fall at St. Edmond

Maddie Thomas and Kessa Kuyper combined to sink 3 free throws in the final 33 seconds to help Humboldt's girls hold off Clarion-Goldfield, 43-40 Friday night (Jan. 25) at Clarion. The win improved Humboldt's season record to 6-10 overall, 5-9 in the North Central Conference.Erica Lane scored 11 points to lead the Wildcats. Lane was backed by Thomas with eight and Lauren Friesth with seven. Sarah Peters, April Jones and Kuyper each had four and Kinzie Wright made three. Karlee Peyton chipped in with two. C-G was led by Stephanie Steiner and Brook Boyd with nine each.Conference power Fort Dodge St. Edmond defeated Humboldt for the second time this season, posting a 55-31 triumph over the Wildcats Tuesday night (Jan. 22) in Fort Dodge. The Wildcats were led in scoring by Erica Lane and Lauren Friesth each with 7 points. Reed Dreyer overcomes adversity

When the referee raised Reed Dreyer’s arm, declaring the Humboldt High School junior the North Central Conference champion at 195 pounds last Saturday, Dreyer became the school’s 97th conference title-holder. He also kept alive Humboldt’s streak of crowning a conference champion at 26 consecutive years. Pretty lofty stuff. But in the big picture of life, Dreyer is just plain happy to have a chance to wrestle as he looks back on an accident in the spring of 2011, where he was struck in the head by a discus during a weekend practice. The life-threatening injury ended his promising football career and forced him to sit out much of the 2011-2012 wrestling season, but he still advanced to districts. This year Dreyer is currently 33-1 and ranked No. 2 in the Class 2A state rankings. But he keeps things in perspective. “The accident makes you think twice about your head. Going through that has made me realize some things aren’t as important as they were before and other things are.

Wrestlers cap unbeaten dual season!

Humboldt's wrestling team capped a perfect regular season dual schedule by whipping Eagle Grove, 70-12 in a North Central Conference dual at Eagle Grove Thursday night (Jan. 24).The Wildcats got victories from Austin Meier (forfeit) at 106, Kylie Zender (pin) at 113, Chris Witzke (forfeit) at 120, Jacob Miller (forfeit) at 126, Mike Madsen (forfeit) at 132, Collin Flick (pin) at 138, Tyler Rutz (forfeit) at 160, Adam Mickelson (forfeit) at 170, Colby Miller (forfeit) at 182, Nikko Wheeler (forfeit) at 195, Cordes Olthoff (major decision, 12-1) at 220 and Dylan Hendricks (2:18 pin) at 285.The Wildcats finish 22-0 overall, 8-0 in the NCC, their best season finish in school history. Humboldt will compete in the Guthrie Center Invitational on Saturday, Jan. 26, and prepare for the Class 2A sectional tournament on Feb. 2 at Cherokee. The top two finishers at each weight class at Cherokee advance to a district at Spencer on Feb. 9. The traditional state tournament is Feb.
