We have all heard those familiar words: an apple a day keeps the doctor away; feed a cold, starve a fever; fish is brain food; for strong muscles, eat spinach, it’s full of iron; eating spicy foods will give you an ulcer; and fried food and chocolate will give you acne. This week’s column will take a look at each adage to see if there is any truth to them and provide some recipes for some that aren’t. “An apple a day keeps the doctor away.” The claim is not literally true, but apples are very healthful. Apples contain antioxidants called flavonoids, which may reduce the risk of some types of cancers. In fact, a major review from the German Cancer Research Center in 2008 stated that those who eat at least one apple a day have less risk of oral cancer, cancer of the voice box, breast cancer and colon, kidney, and ovarian cancer.

Humboldt's wrestling team crushed Iowa Falls-Alden, 71-6 Monday night in Iowa Falls to maintain their first-place standing in the North Central Conference. The Wildcats, 21-0 on the season, 7-0 in the NCC, won 13 of the 14 weight classes with the Cadets and never looked back in the meet, rescheduled from Dec. 20 due to weather.Humboldt got victories from Austin Meier at 106, Levi Sawyer at 113, Kylie Zender at 120, Austen Gargano at 126, Mike Madsen at 138, Thaylan Bowman at 145, Adam Powell at 152, Tyler Rutz at 160, Colton Schnetzer at 170, Nikko Wheeler at 182, Reed Dreyer at 195, Cordes Olthoff at 220 and Dylan Hendricks at 285.Next action for Humboldt is the North Central Conference tournament at Webster City on Jan. 19. LAKE MILLS - The unbeaten and No. 7 ranked Humboldt wrestling team kept its perfect record intact on Saturday (Jan. 12) by going 5-0 to win the Lake Mills Dual Tournament. Humboldt defeated Lake Mills (37-28), North Butler (66-12), West Hancock (55-13), Fort Dodge JV (84-0) and Emmetsburg (55-16).
