Wildcats win 8th straight, top Bulldogs twice in one week

HAMPTON – Humboldt won its eighth straight game and improved its season record to 9-2 by turning back Hampton-Dumont in a pair of games this week. Humboldt defeated the Bulldogs 49-37 on Jan. 11 at Hampton and 58-45 on Jan. 8 in Humboldt.The Wildcats, 8-2 in the North Central Conference, were led in scoring by Michael Orness with 14 points and Jaxon Heinz with 12. Bryan Larson and Brady Ross each had 9 while Matt Pogge made 3 and Ben Jacobson added 2. Parker Claypool led H-D with 9 points. Cole Miller and Bo Brass each had 7.Humboldt also beat the Bulldogs 58-45 on Jan. 8. The Wildcats were led by Bryan Larson's 14 points and Michael Orness with 10. Alex Nelson and Don Smith each had 8 while Brady Ross made 6, Jaxon Heinz 5 and Jaylen Heinz with 3. Ben Madison and Ben Jacobson each had 2.Humboldt, now 9-2 overall on the season, will return home to host Algona Bishop Garrigan on Tuesday, Jan. 15. HHS is at Eagle Grove on Jan.

Humboldt matmen trip St. Edmond, to 15-0 in duals

HUMBOLDT - Humboldt moved one step closer to a North Central Conference dual title by beating Fort Dodge St. Edmond, 34-27 in the Humboldt gym Thursday night (Jan. 10). The triumph moved Humboldt's record to 15-0 overall, 6-0 in the NCC.Picking up wins for Humboldt was Adam Powell at 145, Colton Schnetzer at 160, Adam Mickelson at 170, Nikko Wheeler at 182, Reed Dreyer at 195, Dylan Hendricks at 285, Austen Gargano at 120 and Nick Madsen at 132.The Wildcats will travel to Lake Mills on Saturday, Jan. 12, for the Lake Mills duals. Painting workshop takes to the beach

People looking for a fun way to try their hand at painting without a lot of expense, may want to try Susan Witzel’s Schlop and Schmear painting workshop. It’s also a great and fun way to beat the mid-winter blahs. The two-evening workshop is being sponsored by the Humboldt Area Arts Community (HAAC) and will be offered on consecutive weeks, Wednesday, Jan. 30, and Wednesday, Feb. 6, with painting from 6-8:30 p.m. both evenings. The focus of this workshop will be creating a beach scene. “I may not be able to go to Florida for the winter, but I can paint it,” Witzel said with a laugh. She explained the Schlop and Schmear technique as being originated by Inge Chase, a German immigrant who was an interior decorator for many U.S. stores, and used the painting designs as backdrops for some of her window displays. All supplies and instruction will be provided with the course.

McLain wears many hats for public health

As the lead public health official for Humboldt and Pocahontas counties, Don McLain has to wear many hats and have knowledge of many different aspects of what constitutes a safe environment, safe water and safe food. Don has served as the county sanitarian (environmental specialist) for both Humboldt and Pocahontas counties since July 2006. He has been employed in Pocahontas County since 2001. “The job started out part-time, as I farm also,” McLain said. As more stringent environmental regulations have come into play during the last few years, McLain’s duties have increased. His office is responsible for administration of the Grants to Counties program that helps fund the plugging of abandoned rural water wells, the rehabilitation of existing wells and water testing for the county. McLain also issues new well permits and septic system permits as authorized by the Iowa Code.

Hazard Mitigation Plan approved

Several years in the making, Humboldt County’s multi-jurisdictional Hazard Mitigation Plan is closer to becoming finalized. The Humboldt County Board of Supervisors passed a resolution adopting the plan at their meeting this past week. The plan is something project planners with the Mid-Iowa Development Association (MIDAS) have been working on with communities and the county for the past two years. The 500-page plan includes risk assessments of hazards, vulnerability assessments and lost estimates, mitigation strategies and priorities and action plans for the communities of Bode, Bradgate, Dakota City, Gilmore City, Hardy, Humboldt, Livermore, Renwick, Thor and the rural unincorporated areas of the county. Rutland, Pioneer and Ottosen opted out of developing specific city plans, so their information is included in the hazard mitigation plan for the rural unincorporated areas of the county.

Women in the Outdoors draws interest

A Women in the Outdoors and Jakes event was hosted by the Two Rivers Timber Ghosts Chapter of the National Wild Turkey Federation on Saturday, Jan. 5, at the Humboldt County Events Center. There was cross-country skiing, snow shoeing, a GPS scavenger hunt, BB gun shooting and archery skills for kids and 23 vendors at the Humboldt County Events Center.This is the second year of the Women in the Outdoors and Jakes Day event, and was very successful, according to Two Rivers Timber Ghosts Chapter President Jeff Helvick. The local Wild Turkey Federation Chapter just completed a successful calendar prize raffle and is gearing up for its annual fundraising banquet on Saturday, March 9, at the Events Center. Park proposed for Eagle Ridge Subdivision

At the same time new housing will be going up nearby, a new park may be added to the city’s latest housing development. At Monday’s Humboldt City Council meeting, City Administrator Aaron Burnett talked about a park being proposed for lot 10 of the Eagle Ridge Housing Development. The 33-acre lot is next to the West Fork of the Des Moines River, and a large portion of the lot is in the flood plain. Burnett said Todd Lee, Humboldt County Conservation Director, would like to pursue a joint agreement between the city of Humboldt Parks Department, Humboldt County Conservation and the Humboldt County Housing Development Corporation for development of a park in the described area. “The Humboldt County Housing Development Corp. has always said in all of its conversations that public use would be the best use of that particular lot,” Burnett said. “It’s just a matter of trying to recoup some of the cost they had in purchasing that land,” the city administrator added.
