COOK OF THE WEEK - OATMEAL MONTH

January is National Oatmeal Month. This week’s cook column is dedicated to oats and oatmeal; the history and recipes. Oats have been around for centuries having been first cultivated about 1000 BC in central Europe. Oats were only fed to their animals by the Ancient Greeks and Romans, but when the Western Roman Empire fell to Germanic Tribes who ate oats, oats were introduced to their diet. Oats were a staple in Scotland where the short, wet growing season suited them more than wheat. Students that attended ancient universities in Scotland had a holiday called “Meal Monday” that permitted them to return to their farms to collect more oats for food. European explorers brought oats to America in the early 1600s and planted them off the coast of Massachusetts. The oats were used by the Scottish and Dutch immigrants in traditional porridges, puddings and baked goods. As the settlers moved north and west, so did the oat crop.

HHS wrestlers stay perfect with key double dual sweep over Lions, Lynx - Place 3rd at Ames Invite

HUMBOLDT - Humboldt took sole possession of the North Central Conference wrestling dual standings here Thursday night (Jan. 3) by turning back Clear Lake (34-25) and Webster City (38-24). The sweep moved the No. 7 ranked Wildcats (2A) to 5-0 in the NCC, 14-0 overall on the season.Webster City, which slipped to 5-1 in the league, also defeated Clear Lake (3-3).

Humboldt boys stun No. 2 Iowa Falls-Alden, 57-56

HUMBOLDT – No. 2 ranked Iowa Falls-Alden suffered its first loss of the season here Friday night at the hands of the Humboldt Wildcats, who held off the Cadets 57-56 in a North Central Conference game before a vocal crowd inside the Humboldt gym.The Wildcats, 7-2 overall, 6-2 in the NCC, were led in scoring by Michael Orness with 17 points, Bryan Larson with 16 and Ben Jacobson with 10. Jaxon Heinz also had nine while Matt Pogge made three and Brady Ross two. The Cadets (7-1, 6-1), were paced by Casey Schlatter with 29 points. Kort Redmond added nine, Jake Campbell had seven and Brayden McDaniel six.After trailing for much of the first quarter, Humboldt made a second quarter run and led by 11 points at halftime (39-28), only to see their lead slip in the final quarter. But the Cadets could never regain the lead.Humboldt will play host to Hampton-Dumont on Jan. 8 and then travel to Hampton on Jan. 11. Cadet girls upend Humboldt, 48-34

HUMBOLDT – Humboldt's girls resumed their basketball season here Friday night (Jan. 4) and suffered a 48-34 setback to the Iowa Falls-Alden Cadets. Maddie Thomas scored 13 points, Erica Lane added nine and Kessa Kuyper made four to pace the Wildcat girls, who saw their record slip to 4-6 overall, 3-5 in the North Central Conference. Humboldt also got three points apiece from Lauren Friesth and Kinzie Wright while April Jones added two.Saje Ites paced IFA with 16 points while Jamie Peterson supplied 12. Lindsay Barnhard added nine for the Cadets, who improved to 6-3 overall, 5-3 in the NCC.Humboldt returns to action on Jan. 8 at Fort Dodge Senior High. The Wildcats visit Hampton on Jan. 11.
