County officials sworn in to begin 2013

County business for 2013 officially began Wednesday, Jan. 2, as the Humboldt County Board of Supervisors had their first new meeting of the year. Four supervisors, John “Mort” Christianson, Jerry Haverly, Harlan Hansen and Rick Pedersen were given the oath of office by District Court Judge Kurt Stoebe. Humboldt County Auditor Peggy Rice and Humboldt County Sheriff Dean Kruger were also sworn in for their duties. Pedersen is the lone new supervisor on the board. He run for the nearly created District 3, which includes the southeast portion of the city of Humboldt, all of Beaver Township, with the exception of Dakota City, and the southern half of Norway Township, with the exception of the city of Thor. In action at Wednesday’s meeting, the board approved annexation and reclassification for Drainage District No. 61, lateral 7, located four miles south of Ottosen.

Christmas dinner feeds more than 120 people

Every year, local volunteers provide a Christmas gift to the community, a Christmas dinner at the Faith United Methodist Church in Humboldt, for people who have nowhere to go on Christmas. This year, more than 120 people were served a full meal including pie and cookies. Among the volunteers were Bob Fort (left) of Humboldt and LuAnn Johnson of Dakota City, who spent Monday, Dec. 24, cooking and preparing ham and turkey. Fort and Johnson were two of about a dozen people who made the dinner. Lay minister Gary Ehrle provided special music for the attendees.

Weather conditions contribute to area accidents

The Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office (HCSO) investigated a number of weather-related accidents on Dec. 18-20, as the area experienced its first measurable snowfall of the season. On Thursday, Dec. 20, at approximately 3:10 p.m., a 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee driven by Autumn E. Trunkhill, 17, Humboldt, was northbound on West Fork Drive, just north of Highway 3, lost control of the vehicle due to snow-covered road conditions. The Jeep left the roadway to the right, striking two separate banks of mailboxes, knocking them to the ground. The vehicle then reportedly left the scene. The identity of the driver and the vehicle was discovered by law enforcement after talking to witnesses. The accident caused an estimated $900 in damage to the Jeep Trunkhill was driving, and an estimated $500 to the mailboxes belonging to the US Postal Service. There were no injuries and no charges were filed.

2012 marks growth in Humboldt County

The conclusion of one year on the calendar and the beginning of a new one, provides an opportunity to look back, to reflect on the events that shaped the past 12 months. For Humboldt County, the constant was change. The year 2012 saw construction on a new Humboldt middle school completed and the building occupied; a new business park development completed and a new housing addition developed with eight lots sold for development. There were many business start-ups, expansions and relocations, the completion of new fire stations in two area towns and new developments at the county hospital and at the county’s school districts. Clark, Bucs come up short in playoff bid

Dallas Clark’s first season with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers ended quietly last weekend. Clark, the Livermore native and former University of Iowa All-American tight end, wrapped up his 10th year in the National Football League as the Buccaneers closed out the 2012 season in a 22-17 victory over the Atlanta Falcons last Sunday. The youthful Buccaneers, under first-year head coach Greg Schiano, finished the year at 7-9. The season included a five-game losing streak before they beat the 13-3 Falcons. The skid put the brakes to a mid-season run where the Bucs put themselves in contention for a wild card playoff berth. “Our run was short-lived,” Clark said. “We lost a few games down the stretch that really cost us our chances.” Tampa Bay opened the season with a 1-3 record. After a bye in week five, the Bucs won five of their next six games, including four straight from Oct. 25 to Nov. 18.
