Christensen named principal with Jones Financial Companies

Edward Jones Financial Advisor Tony Christensen, a Humboldt native, was recently named a principal with the firm’s holding company, the Jones Financial Companies, LLLP. He is one of only 37 individuals chosen from more than 42,000 associates across the United States and Canada to join the firm’s 336 principals. He and his family – his wife, Allison, and three children: Keegan, 16; Quinn, 13; and Aiden, 10 – will remain in Humboldt, and Christensen will continue serving investors throughout the area. Christensen joined Edward Jones in 1991, and opened a branch in Havre, MT. He returned to Humboldt in 1996, to manage a local branch office. Today, his nephew, Clifton Kalafatich, manages the community’s second Edward Jones branch. In addition to serving as a financial advisor, Christensen guides and supports more than 40 financial advisors located throughout northwest Iowa as an Edward Jones regional leader.

Cassiday in front seat at Backseat

When entering the Backseat Diner, it’s not only like visiting one of the malt shops of the 1950s and early ‘60s, it’s like sitting down at the kitchen table and having mom or grandma serve up a heaping helping of downhome cooking. That’s the way it has been, and that’s the way Sarah Cassiday likes it. Sarah took over Feb. 1, as the new owner of the Backseat Diner, breaking a long family tradition. Jeff Davis and wife Nita had operated the diner for several years, dating back to before the name change nearly 10 years ago. The Davis’ operated the Burger Boy at the same location and Jeff’s sister operated the restaurant before that. Sarah plans some special promotions, menu specials and events to celebrate the restaurant's 10th year as Backseat Diner and Drive-In, but beyond that, not a lot will change. “Everything is staying the same, the hours, the décor, the food, the service.

COOK OF THE WEEK - CHERRIES

When you think of February, you naturally think of Valentine’s Day and Presidents’ Day. It may also make you think of the colors of red and pink. The color red may make you think of cherries and the wonderful recipes that use cherries. Since February is National Cherry Month, those thoughts are very fitting. Not only are cherries delicious, but they are also a very healthy snack or baking ingredient. Cherries contain no fat or cholesterol, but are a great source of Vitamin C, fiber, potassium and antioxidants. A great pre-bedtime snack, cherries contain melatonin, which can be used as a sleep aid to help with insomnia. Anthocyanin and bioflavonoids are also contained in cherries and have anti-inflammatory and pain relieving qualities. There are two major types of cherries: sweet and tart. Sweet cherries are usually the ones used for snacking and the tart cherries are used for cooking and baking. There are over a thousand different varieties of cherries grown around the world.
