Drill Team Night is Saturday at Humboldt High

The annual Humboldt Drill Team Night will be Saturday, March 16, at 7 p.m. at the HHS gym. Admission is $5 for adults and $4 or students. Prior to the performance, there will be a Vinny’s feed with pulled pork and all the fixings served from 5-6:30 p.m. (free will donation). The drill team clinic for girls and boys grades preschool through eighth grade takes place starting at 9 a.m. They will perform routines they learn from HHS Drill Team members in the evening show. The Humboldt High School Drill Team won first place for their Hoopla routine at State Drill Team competition. This led to an invitation to perform at halftime of the Iowa Girls High School State Basketball Tournament in Des Moines.

$10.6 million budget approved for Humboldt County

The Humboldt County Board of Supervisors approved a budget for 2013-14 where the tax levy is about five cents less than the current levy. The new levy is $6.06 for those who live in a city, and $10.01 for rural residents. Auditor Peggy Rice said the budget calls for total revenues of $10,448,589 and total expenses of $10,676,009. If the entire budget is expended, the county will use about $227,000 in cash reserves. The new budget includes 3.5 percent raises for elected officials as recommended by the Humboldt County Compensation Board. The board approved the new Humboldt County flag with a change from two weeks ago. The one change was the addition of another star. The 13 stars represent the towns in the county. The board thanked graphic designer Bonita McLarnen for her work on the project. Craig Malloy of the Veteran’s Affairs office told the board a second Honor Flight has been added for Sept. 7. The first Honor Flight this year is May 11.

UDMO announces new staff at Humboldt County office

The Humboldt County UDMO office has some new faces doing outreach work for the citizens of the county. Mary Ohrtman is the director of the Humboldt County Outreach Center, located on the third floor of the Humboldt Count Courthouse. Ohrtman is also the director for Webster, Hamilton and Wright Counties. The Humboldt County UDMO Outreach Specialist is Sherry Carlson, while Becky Jensen is the office aide. Ohrtman moved to Fort Dodge a year ago from Pocahontas County. Prior to joining UDMO, she worked in Buena Vista County Public Health for 10 years. Carlson, an Austin, TX, native, has lived in the Humboldt area for the past 22 years. She has a dog grooming business that she’ll continue to do on the weekends. “I’m excited to be back into the community and look forward to helping people,” Carlson said. Jensen moved to Humboldt in June of 2011 from Pocahontas.

Former student comes back to talk engineering

Humboldt High School engineering students had a bonus visit from a former student last Tuesday, March 5. Adam Rasmussen, a 2006 graduate of Humboldt High School and a 2010 electrical engineering graduate from Iowa State University, met with the classes to discuss his job with Garmin in Kansas City. The son of Kevin and Lisa Rasmussen interned for both Rockwell Collins and Garmin while in college and went to work for Garmin right out of college. He is currently a design engineer on Garmin’s fitness team. He’s assisted with the development of such Garmin products as the Edge, Forerunner and ForerunnerXT. “My high school classes helped because I challenged myself. If you take the bare minimum, you won’t be prepared for college,” Rasmussen said. “Challenge yourself right now with the classes you take in high school so college won’t be such a big jump for you.

Hometown restaurant plans rebuild after fire

Pasquale’s Italian Restaurant, a family owned restaurant in Humboldt since the early 1960s, sustained extensive smoke and heat damage from a fire on Wednesday night, March 6. The good news is owners Matt and Jenny Brown plan to repair the damage and hope to re-open in two to three months. The Humboldt Police Department discovered the fire and had the Humboldt Fire Department dispatched at 10:27 p.m. Fire Chief Tony Hosford said upon arrival, smoke was coming out of the vents in the roof. Firefighters entered from the front of the building and extinguished the fire, which was on the south side near the cooking area. “The inside of the building received extensive smoke and fire damage,” Hosford said. Cause of the fire is undetermined at this time. Matt Brown and his wife, Jenny, will have owned Pasquale’s for nine years in May.

Golden Egg Hunt begins next week

With a little cooperation from Mother Nature, the Golden Egg should be visible by next week, and not buried under a snow bank. A nine-inch snowfall Sunday and Sunday night, the largest of the winter season, left a heavy blanket over the ground gearing up for spring on March 20. That is the same day the Humboldt/Dakota City Chamber begins its annual Golden Egg hunt. The hunt will continue until Friday, March 29, or until the large Golden Egg is found. As in past years, the large Golden Egg and four smaller eggs will be hidden on public grounds within the city limits of Humboldt and Dakota City. The lucky person who finds the Golden Egg will be rewarded with $500 in Humboldt/Dakota City Chamber Bucks. The people who find the four smaller eggs will each receive a five-punch pass to the Humboldt Family Aquatic Center and a KHBT T-shirt. The first clue will be published in the March 20 Humboldt Reminder.
