It’s hard to believe, but the third annual Meals from the Heartland meal raising surpassed even the organizers’ expectations. A total of 90,720 meals were packaged by nearly 500 local volunteers on Friday afternoon and Saturday morning. More than $18,000 was donated toward the humanitarian effort, according to Pastor Gene Broughton of the Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church, where the annual event has been held. “It was unbelievable,” said organizer Allen Goche, on behalf of The Humboldt County Ministerial Association. “The level of support from the community and all of the volunteers was fantastic. When spring arrives, so does asparagus. This week’s cook column is dedicated to asparagus, that wonderful vegetable that helps announce the arrival of spring. The name asparagus comes from the Greek word asparagos. Asparagus is currently cultivated around the world, but its origin is the East Mediterranean area. The cultivation of asparagus began 2,000 years ago. It was eaten fresh and dried for use in the winter by the Greeks and Romans. The vegetable appeared in England about the year 1000 and was known as sperage and sperach. Due to its delicate flavor and diuretic properties, it has been used not only as a vegetable but also as medicine. “Velocius quam asparagi conquantur” is a phrase coined by Emperor Augustus. Translated, it means to do something faster than you can cook asparagus. Julius Caesar and King Louis XIV were both fans of asparagus.

WEBSTER CITY – No. 8 ranked Webster City scored two goals in the second half to upend Humboldt, 2-0 in a boys' high school soccer game Monday night (April 8) at Webster City. The Lynx, now 2-0 on the season, scored in the 43rd and 79th minutes of the game. Humboldt is now 0-1.Humboldt lost the junior varsity contest, 3-2. Brett Fishel and Mike Madsen each scored a goal for Humboldt.The Wildcats' games at Carroll on April 9 were postponed due to cold, wet weather. Humboldt returns to action on April 12 at Clear Lake and on April 15 at Mason City. Storm Lake visits Humboldt on April 16.
