Humboldt native Tony Ersland excited about future of Purdue wrestling

To put it mildly, Purdue University head wrestling coach Tony Ersland is driven.

Coming off an NCAA tournament where his team had three qualifiers with no all-Americans and a 50th place finish, the results aren’t anything to brag about.
But the Humboldt native, who completed his third season rebuilding the Boilermaker program, says it is all part of process and he is excited about the program’s future as he brings in strong recruiting classes.

“Incremental growth is how I would describe our past season. There was progress,” Ersland said of his team that went 9-7 overall in duals, including a 3-6 Big Ten Conference record.
“All season long you set your sights on being on the podium at nationals. You strive for national titles and being all-Americans. We didn’t have any of those, but I see incremental progress,” Ersland said.

Residents like parks, see highway crossings as safety issue

Local residents had some strong opinions on things they like and things that could be improved upon, according to a Community Visioning focus group workshop on Saturday, March 18, at the Mease Elementary School.
A total of 24 people participated in the question and answer sessions and discussions.
The focus groups were divided into categories: parents and youth; older adults; active recreationalists and people with mobility impairments.
Organizers were trying to find some consensus and an overall feeling about what people think about the transportation enhancements currently in place and ways to improve the community in that regard.

Hy-Capacity and HCMH square off

Employees of Hy-Capacity and Humboldt County Memorial Hospital lost a total of 927 pounds over a nine-week period during the first annual Wellness Challenge. Businesses are encouraged to join the next friendly competition.

With 927 pounds lost by 121 participants in a nine-week Wellness Challenge everyone was a winner.
But based on percentage lost, employees at Hy-Capacity won the first annual Mission Slim Possible competing against employees from Humboldt County Memorial Hospital.
The 35 participants from Hy-Capacity lost a total of 267 pounds. The 86 participants from HCMH lost a total of 659.9 pounds.
In early January, Hy-Capacity and HCMH started a friendly competition with each other to promote wellness in the workplace and within the community. The team members were challenged to focus on creating healthy lifestyle habits, logging active minutes, increasing water intake, getting recommended fruits and vegetables, getting enough sleep and just being positive.
