HHS girls 2nd in NCC golf, Carlson medalist with school record 76

Nora Carlson set a new school record with an 18-hole 76 to lead the Humboldt girls’ golf team to a runner-up finish in the North Central Conference meet held on Monday, May 10 in Mason City.

Carlson’s 36-40—76 broke the school record 78 she shot two years ago in the state tournament. Humboldt finished with 387 strokes, 32 behind top-ranked and league champion Clear Lake, which had 355.

“When you compare today’s score from our last 18-hole meet, we shaved off 29 strokes. That’s pretty good,” Harklau said. “All of our girls played really well today.”

Carlson was backed by teammate Noelle Hamand, who was eighth overall with 49-51—100. Aries Packard shot 51-53—104, Chloe Mayall 54-53—107 and Ashlee Wergeland 51-58—109. Tori Gargano finished with 58-66—124. Carlson was battling Clear Lake standout Meghan DeLong, who finished second with a 77.

Humboldt boys 4th in NCC golf, 3A sectional

The Humboldt boys' golf team saw their season come to an end after placing fourth in a Class 3A Sectional tournament in Spencer on May 13.

Humboldt also finished fourth in the North Central Conference tournament held Monday, May 10, at Fort Dodge Country Club.

The Wildcats finished with 342 strokes. Webster City won the team title with 328. Clear Lake was second at 336 and Hampton-Dumont-CAL third with 339.

Gabe Gidel paced Humboldt with an 81. Jayden Gargano followed with 85 and Ty Gargano carded an 88. Carson Sleiter shot an 88. Jake Lenning had an 89.

Trey Lyons of Webster City was meet medalist with a 78.

In the sectional at Spencer, Humboldt finished with 346 total. Spirit Lake (321), Spencer (323) and MOC-Floyd Valley (328) finished in the top three spots and advance to district competition at Orange City on May 20.

HUMBOLDT GIRLS WIN NCC TRACK CHAMPIONSHIP!!

Humboldt won seven events and went on to win the North Central Conference girls track championship Thursday night (May 6) in Humboldt at Mason Maach Field.

The Wildcats finished with 160 team points, well ahead of Iowa Falls-Alden at 120. Algona was third with 115 and Clarion-Goldfield-Dows had 114. Fort Dodge St. Edmond (84), Webster City (79), Hampton-Dumont-CAL (28) and Clear Lake (17) round out the scoring.

Humboldt's Lily Groat and Kendal Clark were double winners individually. Groat took the 100-meter hurdles (16.7) and 400-meter hurdles (1:09.5) titles. Groat just edged teammate Jori Hajek (16.7) at the finish line in the 100-meter hurdles. Clark won the shot put (41-2.25) and discus (141-7) titles.

The shuttle hurdle relay of Hajek, Rylie Satern, Macey Varangkounh and Jennika Beach took first in 1:12.1. The 800-meter medley relay of Morgan Olson, Alexis Hansen, Groat and Paige DeWinter took first in 1:57.5.

Edge set to enjoy fruits of her labor

Cindy Edge, Principal of St. Mary School for the last 11 years, is retiring at the end of the school year. She is pictured in front of the new entrance to the school, which is in the midst of a renovation and addition project. Humboldt Independent photo.

Six years ago, Cindy and Keith Edge planted a variety of fruit trees on their 40-acre acreage northwest of Humboldt. Now it’s time to start enjoying the fruits of their labor.
Edge recently announced she is retiring from her position as Principal of St. Mary School in Humboldt after 11 years as Principal, 22 years at St. Mary School and a total of 27 years working in Catholic schools. Her last contract day at St. Mary School is June 30.
“I will miss working with the children, staff and families. Being passionate about children my whole life, I hope to be able to read books to our grandchildren. I’m looking forward to working in our garden and with all of the fruit trees. Being able to raise our own food is pretty amazing,” Edge said.

Docile cattle perform well at Livermore farm

It’s a bit of a family tradition for Jennifer Rolland and Rich Shimon. The two have been raising cattle on their farm south of Livermore for the past 15 years, but livestock, and in particular, feeding cattle, goes far back in their pasts and even farther in that of their families.
“It gets in your blood,” Shimon said about the desire to have some hoofs to care for.
“I’ve always loved cattle and I knew it was something I wanted to come back to some day,” Rolland said.

Highway 169 water main project on track

One action item led to some discussion of additional street work, spring clean up nuisance enforcement at Monday’s Humboldt City Council meeting.
The lone item of business outside of consent agenda items (financial reporting and liquor license permits), was a resolution to approve a payment to Nettleton Excavating of Clear Lake for work on the Highway 169 water main project, which is currently underway.
The Council unanimously approved a payment of $127,376.95 to Nettleton for work completed to date.
Work started from the Park Shop on 3rd Avenue North and has continued across the highway with casings and pipe. Most of the expense so far has been for equipment mobilization, driveway removal, water hydrant assembly and removal, subgrade preparation, excavation and eight-inch water main replacement.
