Wrestlers handle ELC, 55-23


Humboldt and Estherville-Lincoln Central met at under the spotlight in the Humboldt gym on Thursday night, Nov. 30. The Wildcats prevailed, 55-23.

Humboldt won seven matches by fall and also picked up a major decision, a technical fall, a regular decision and two forfeits to roll past Estherville-Lincoln Central, 55-23 in a non-conference dual in the Wildcat gym on Thursday night, Nov. 30.

Freshman Broedy Hendricks pinned Dylan Peta in 21 seconds at 175 pounds to lead the Wildcats, who improved to 3-0 overall on the young season.

Humboldt will host the Joe Fitch Invitational on Friday, Dec. 1, starting at 4:30 p.m.

Mandatory grant meeting is Dec. 7

The Humboldt County Community Foundation (HCCF) mandatory grant meeting will be Thursday, Dec. 7, at 6 p.m. at the VFW Hall, 412 Main St., Dakota City.
Mandatory means that all non-profits seeking Community Foundation grant funds must have a representative in attendance at next week’s meeting. In 2022, the HCCF gave out more than $106,000 in grant funds.
Grant applications are currently available. They are due Friday, Jan. 5, 2024 at 4 p.m. at Humboldt City Hall, 29 5th St. S. If mailed, the applications must be postmarked by Jan. 2.
Notice of grant awards will be made on Feb. 16, with a grant awards ceremony for recipients scheduled for March 14 at Humboldt County Memorial Hospital.

Community mourns Hardy teen's death

The community is mourning the death of a 13-year-old Humboldt Middle School student in a traffic accident that happened last Wednesday, Nov. 22, at 3:42 p.m.
The accident occurred at the intersection of Union Avenue (County Road P-66) and 110th Street (County Road C-58) in northeast Webster County, 2.25 miles northeast of Badger and four miles south of Thor.
According to the Iowa State Patrol, a 2014 Toyota Camry driven by Sara A. Sanga, 33, of Hardy, was northbound on Union Avenue. A 2014 Dodge Ram pickup truck driven by Logan Christensen, 37, of Eagle Grove, was westbound on 110th Street. According to the report, Christensen failed to stop at the sign, striking the Sanga vehicle on the passenger side.
Both vehicles entered the northwest ditch of the intersection. The Dodge truck struck a MidAmerican Energy utility pole.

Hospice Light Up A Life is Dec. 4


Humboldt County Memorial Hospital and the Humboldt County Hospice Foundation will be hosting a live in-person event on Monday, Dec. 4 at 7 p.m. at the hospital. People may donate a minimum of $20 to have a bulb lighted in honor or memory of a loved one. Independent file photo.

The 2023 Hospice Light Up A Life event will be a live, in-person event on Monday, Dec. 4, at 7 p.m. at Humboldt County Memorial Hospital.
Donate a minimum of $20, or more, and submit a name to have a bulb lighted on the evergreen tree in the Path of Life Garden at HCMH. The donations go toward the Humboldt County Hospice Foundation and may be in honor of a living person or in memory of someone deceased. Gifts are tax-deductible.
Light Up A Life forms may be found in the Nov. 15 Holiday Gift Guide that was inserted in the Humboldt Reminder. Wrestlers down Huskies, Roadrunners

Humboldt's varsity boys' wrestling team opened their season with a pair of non-conference dual victories at Truro on Nov. 28. The Wildcats defeated host Interstate-35, 56-35, and posted a 37-33 victory over Winterset.

The Wildcats return to action at home on Thursday, Nov. 30, when they host Estherville-Lincoln Central. Action begins at 6:30 p.m. with the junior varsity matches. Varsity will follow.

Wildcat girls, boys post wins at Manson

The Humboldt girls' basketball team moved to 2-1 overall on the season by stopping Manson-Northwest Webster, 50-43 in non-conference play Tuesday night (Nov. 28) in Manson. Morgan Mann scored 17 points to lead the Wildcats. Paige Nelson, Reagan Lee and Ava Fischer each had seven points.

Evan Hatcher poured in 30 points and Elliot Carlson added 18 to power the Wildcat boys past the Cougars, 71-60. Riley Sorensen added 10 for the Wildcats in their season opener.

Humboldt's girls travel to Iowa Falls on Friday, Dec. 1, for a conference matchup with the Cadets. The boys visit Spirit Lake on Monday, Dec. 5.

The Wildcats will host Fort Dodge St. Edmond on Dec. 9 on a night of girl-boy, JV-varsity action.
