Dakota City Council discusses tiling and tables ordinance on scooters.

DAKOTA CITY - The Dakota City Council met on Wednesday, Aug. 13 for their regular session.

Dakota City resident Adam Mickelson addressed the council during their regular meeting on Wednesday, Aug. 13.

According to Mickelson who lives on 4th Street North, he had been having trouble with his sewer line, finally excavating the site to find the issue.

Brad Duffy, an employee for the City of Dakota City, explained that the problem Mickelson encountered was caused when the sewer line in that section of town had been sliplined, the area for opening for Mickelson’s tile had not been cut out.

When a tile is sliplined, a sleeve of material is inserted into the tile and UV rays are used to harden it, extending the life of the tile. meaning a hard cured plastic. Before insertion, the areas where there are connecting tile is marked and those areas are cut out following the curing of the slipline.

On Saturday, Aug. 16, 2025, Maxine Mae (Laisy) Biteler passed away peacefully and was lovingly welcomed by the Lord. A gentle soul, Maxine touched the lives of many with her grace, warmth and quiet strength. Whether preparing a home-cooked meal for her family or playing cards with her grandchildren, she gave freely of herself - always with patience, bringing joy and laughter to those around her. She leaves behind a legacy of love, kindness and unwavering devotion to those she held dear. Her memory will live on in countless lives she enriched simply by being herself.
Maxine was born on Dec. 16, 1943, in Chester, SD, to Otto and Grace (Wagnitz) Laisy. She grew up in Madison, SD, and graduated high school in 1961.

MATTHEW T. KELLNER

Matthew Kellner, age 55 of Livermore, passed away on Wednesday, Aug. 20, 2025 at the Humboldt County Memorial Hospital. A Celebration of Life will be held at 4 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 13, at the K. Tire Shop located at 1544 Pine Ave, Livermore, IA 50558. Lentz Funeral Home of Livermore is assisting the family.
Matthew Thomas Kellner, the son of Thomas Clair and Joan Marie (Berte) Kellner, was born on May 24, 1970 in Algona. He graduated from Twin Rivers High School and then attended Iowa Lakes Community College where he received an autobody diploma. On March 24, 2007, Matt was united in marriage to Nette McCullough at their family farm.

Humboldt approves ordinance on electric scooters, two police officers sworn in

HUMBOLDT - The long-awaited scooter ordinance was approved by the Humboldt City Council at their meeting on Monday night, Aug. 18.

The council approved a resolution updating its bicycle laws and addresses electric scooters, which have become popular in the community over the last five months, which have also drawn complaints over the spring and summer months.

The council waived the second and third readings, which means the ordinance will go into effect on Aug. 28 after it is published in the Humboldt Independent Newspaper.

It bans the operation of electric scooters on sidewalks along Sumner Avenue from Eighth Street to Fourth Street. The scooters can be operated on Sumner Avenue street through downtown but have to obey all traffic laws.

MARALOU TEPNER

Maralou Tepner, 86, died Friday, Aug. 8, 2025, at her home. A private family inurnment will be held at Rosehill Cemetery, Rockwell City.
Maralou was born in Lake City, the daughter of Arthur E. and Vernetta R. “Babe” (Poesch) Wolff. She graduated from Rockwell City High School, where she excelled as a talented six-on-six basketball player and worked as a lifeguard during the summers.
She continued her education at Drake University, earning her Bachelor’s degree in Business along with a major in Music. Maralou had a deep love for music, especially playing the piano. While attending Drake, she met Franklin L. Tepner, who was studying medicine.

BRANDON L. STALPES

Brandon Stalpes, 40 of Humboldt, passed away on Aug. 10, 2025 in Fort Collins, CO. Funeral services were held on Monday, Aug. 18, at Lentz Funeral Home in Humboldt. Service were livestreamed via Lentz Funeral Home’s website. Burial will take place at Fort Snelling National Cemetery. Lentz Funeral Home of Humboldt assisted the family.
Brandon Lee Stalpes, the son of Steve and Pam (Felker) Stalpes, was born on Aug. 20, 1984 in Phoenix, AZ. He graduated from Humboldt High School in 2003. Brandon received a Culinary Arts degree and Bio Technology degree from Iowa Central Community College. He was in the process of receiving a degree in Cyber Security from SNHU. Brandon served in the Army National Guard and was activated to serve in Afghanistan and later in Kosovo. He was a lifetime member of the VFW.

MARVIN MEYER

Marvin Meyer, 85 of Humboldt, passed away on Saturday evening, Aug. 9, 2025 at his home in Humboldt with his family by his side.
Marvin was born June 26, 1940 in Hampton, the son of Tom and Ella (Richtsmeier) Meyer. He attended Maysville Country School south of Hampton and in the seventh grade moved with his family to Corwith. He was confirmed at St. John’s Lutheran Church and graduated from Corwith High School in 1958. He enlisted in the National Guard and served from 1962 until 1968. On Dec. 8, 1962, he married Linda J. Kubly at Zion Lutheran Church in Lu Verne. The couple made their home near Lu Verne, and later near Renwick where they farmed.
