Council will proceed with water rate increase

HUMBOLDT - After discussion at their regular meeting on Monday night, Aug. 4, the Humboldt City Council gave the go-ahead to implement an increase in the water rate – the first increase in five years.

The council, which spent considerable time talking about water rates at their July 21 meeting, directed city administrator Cole Bockelmann to proceed with drafting an ordinance and formula to generate more revenue. The council will then vote on the matter over the course of three meetings before it is finalized.

The increase will offset a decline in water usage as well as increased costs to operate the water system.

The proposal calls for the minimum base rate to go from $14.46 to $20, accompanied by a 10 percent usage rate increase in year one, a 10 percent usage rate increase in year two and a five percent usage rate increase in year three. The base rate would remain at $20.

LINDA L. POPPINGA

Linda Louise (Christensen) Poppinga, 77, of Fort Dodge, Iowa, passed away on Aug. 2, 2025 at her home surrounded by family and her dogs.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 8, 2025 at Grace Lutheran Church, Fort Dodge. Burial will follow in Indian Mound Cemetery, Humboldt. A visitation will begin one hour prior to the service at the church. Laufersweiler Funeral Home is serving the family.

LOANN D. HEYNIS

LoAnn Dee Heynis passed away on July 21st at UnityPoint-Trinity Regional Medical Center in Fort Dodge. She had been a resident of Fort Dodge Health and Rehabilitation Care Center.
She was born on Jan. 30, 1947 in Fort Dodge to Orrin Douglas and Lorraine (Lindhart) Mitsven. She graduated from Round Lake High School in Illinois in 1966. She went to nurses training and graduated as a Registered Nurse.
LoAnn married Ray Heynis II in Illinois and they lived in McHenry for several years. LoAnn and their children, Raymond and Rachel, moved to Humboldt when the children were young. She worked at North Care Center in Humboldt and Trinity Regional Hospital in Fort Dodge.
She was preceded in death by her parents, grandparents, son and daughter and her brother, Orrin (Skip) Mitsven and sister-in-law Diane.

MARJORIE CRONK

Marjorie Cronk, 93, formerly of Humboldt, passed away on Thursday morning, July 31, 2025 at the Good Samaritan Society in Manson.
Marjorie was born in Humboldt on March 18, 1932 to Harry and Esther (Terwilliger) Cronk. Following the death of her parents, Marjorie resided at Humboldt Homes with the assistance of her brother Don and his wife Betty. In 1982 Marjorie began working at the Humboldt Workshop. She enjoyed and participated in many of the activities at the workshop. Marjorie was also employed in the Humboldt Workshop Supported Employment program with assistance of a job coach.
In January 2023 she moved to reside at the Humboldt Group Home and enjoyed their many outings. Marjorie’s also resided in several homes in the Humboldt Community with assistance from the Humboldt Workshop and Life Works, Fort Dodge staff.

Fine particulate levels expected to exceed state air quality standards throughout the weekend

The Iowa DNR released the following press release regarding air quality.

DES MOINES - Exceedances of the National Ambient Air Quality Standards (NAAQS) for fine particulates are expected today and tomorrow over most of the state. Smoke from wildfires in northwestern Canada has converged over Iowa and is expected to lead to fine particulate matter exceedances over most of the state today.

The smoke is expected to remain over the area and affect air quality until about midnight Saturday night, with possible residual effects extending into early Sunday. While continuous monitors for fine particulate recorded exceedances of the NAAQS across almost all of Iowa on Thursday, the final results will not be available until filters from federal reference monitors have been manually weighed. Wildfire smoke carries large amounts of particulates as well as gases that may act as ozone precursors and can lead to exceedances of the NAAQS for both fine particulate matter and ozone.
