Wildcat boys fall at Algona, teams will meet again Feb. 23 in substate opener

Humboldt will compete in Class 3A Substate 8 in next week's boys' Class 3A post-season tournament play.

Algona snapped Humboldt's three-game winning streak by turning back the wildcats 66-56 in the Algona gym on Monday, February. 16. Cade Birdsell scored 17 points and Jackson Flaherty had 11 to lead the Wildcat scoring. Nathan Manske scored 24 for Algona. Landon Campe had 16. Humboldt slipped to 13-8 overall, 8-6 in league play. The two teams will meet again in a first round substate tournament game in Humboldt on Monday, Feb. 23, 7 p.m.

The Humboldt boys' basketball team got balanced scoring and a strong defensive effort to down Iowa Falls-Alden, 67-44 in a North Central Conference game in the Humboldt gym on Friday, Feb. 6. Humboldt was led in scoring by Cade Birdsell with 21 points. All of his points came on seven 3-point baskets. Chase Hansen hit for 12 points, Valley Davis supplied eight, Chase Flaherty seven, Jackson Flaherty six, Dane Clark six and Karson Rubel five.

IFA was led by Brody McNeal with 13 points. Sam Turner had nine.

Wildcats sidelined by Carroll, 53-38

The Humboldt girls' basketball team saw their season come to an end in a Class 3A Region 7 tournament game at Carroll on Saturday, Feb. 14. Humboldt finishes the season at 9-13 overall.

Humboldt & Twin Rivers Superintendent Finalists announced

The Boards of Education of the Humboldt and Twin Rivers Community School Districts announced today the three finalists for the position of Superintendent of Schools.

The three finalists will interview on Wednesday, Feb. 11. The formal interview schedule includes multiple sessions with stakeholder groups and a community tour. Feedback from the interview teams will be shared with the school board later the same evening to assist them in selecting the new superintendent. The successful candidate will begin their duties on July 1, 2026.

Ken brings more than 30 years of experience in public education, having served as a teacher, High School Principal and university professor. He holds a Doctor of Education in Curriculum and Instruction from the University of Northern Iowa and a Specialist Degree with PK–12 Superintendent/AEA Administrator and Director of Special Education endorsements from Drake University.

Humboldt High junior Danica Diedrick capped an outstanding season on the wrestling mat by placing third at 170 in the Class 1A state championship in Coralville on Friday, Feb. 6. Diedrick opened day two of the state tournament inside Xtream Arena with a 5-1 loss to top-seeded Bricsia Garcia-Vasquez of West Liberty. Diedrick came back to pin Izzy Taylor of Anamosa in the consolation round in 3:56. In the third-place consolation final match, Diedrick pinned Kayma Burleson of Clear Creek-Amana in 4:39. Diedrick finishes the season at 38-4.

Wildcat matmen fall in regional dual

The Humboldt boys wrestling team saw their dual season come to a close in a Class 2A regional at Clarion on Tuesday night, Feb. 3.

The Wildcats defeated Denver (37-32) and lost to second ranked Clarion-Goldfield-Dows (70-9).

Humboldt finished the regular season at 22-7.

They will now prepare for the District tournament at Sergeant Bluff on Feb. 14. The top two placewinners at each weight class advance to the traditional state championship in Des Moines Feb. 19-21.

Turning the keys over at Seiler Appliance

Seiler Appliance has been a staple in the business community in Humboldt County for more than 60 years and will remain in place following the recent sale of the business.

Seiler Appliance was established when John Seiler and his wife, Laura, bought the appliance store from Jerry Vandenberg in 1963.

In January of 1996, John sold the business to his son Russ and Russ’s wife, Mary. Now, 30 years later, Russ and Mary followed in John’s footsteps and sold the business to their son, David Seiler and his wife, Emma.

“I thought it was time to step back a little bit. I am still coming in most every day and working so I can help them to get started,” Russ said.

David who has worked in the business since the age of 14, took a few years after school to attend Iowa Central Community College, majoring in HVAC systems.
