Knights run past Panthers, 74-42
Corwith-Wesley-LuVerne football coach Ryan Wagner liked the way his team’s defense had been responding in recent weeks. But the Panther defense wasn’t able to keep the Graettinger-Terril/Ruthven-Ayrshire offense in check in a 74-42 loss to the Knights last Friday night (Oct. 19) in Eight-Man District 2 football at Ruthven The regular season finale saw the Knights gain over 500 yards of offense. They set the tone early with a 16 first-quarter points, then followed with 28 second quarter points. “We couldn’t stop their offense tonight. We played really good defense a week ago at Buffalo Center, then we go to Ruthven and get the ball run right at us,” Wagner said. “We couldn’t make the tackles when we had the opportunities and at other times we ran right by the ball,” Wagner said. “They ran right at us and we knew going in that they were going to do that, but we couldn’t do anything to stop them.” CWL accounted for 270 yards of offense with senior back Preston Jensen rushing for 89 yards on 14 carries in his final game. Esden Carroll totaled 85 yards on 10 tries and Derek Studer, another senior, gained 56 yards on nine carries. Freshman Grant Carroll and senior defensive end Josh Hilbert were again the defensive leaders with 17 and 16 total tackles, respectively. “On offense we scored some points, but we couldn’t sustain enough drives in the first half to keep us close,” Wagner said. “They were able to make some stops on us after we drove down the field and we were not. We also had some issues with kick returns that cost us late in the first half. The kids battled in the second half and scored quite a bit, but we couldn’t get enough stops to make the comeback.” CWL finishes the 2012 season with an overall record of 3-7, 2-5 in district play.Quarter scoringCWL 6 8 16 12 42GTRA 16 28 18 12 74Scoring summaryG–Williamson 1-yd run, Williamson run, 1stC–Preston Jensen 62-yd kickoff return, conversion no good, 1stG–Dalen 2-yd run, Girres pass from Alesch, 1stG–Dalen 3-yd run, Williamson run, 2ndC–Derek Studer 10-yd runk Jensen run, 2ndG–Alesch 13-yd pass to Dalen, Williamson run, 2ndG–Alesch 6-yd run, Chicoine pass catch, 2ndG–Alesch 25-yd run, conversion no good, 2ndG–Williamson 2-yd run, Williamson run, 2ndC–Derek Studer 2-yd run, Jensen run, 3rdC–Jensen 25-yd run, Jensen pass from Esden Carroll, 3rdG–Williamson 8-yd run, conversion no good, 4thC–Josh Hilbert 14-yd run, conversion no good, 4thG–Reiman 33-yd pass to Girres, Girres run, 4thC–Jensen 44-yd run, conversion no tried, 4thGAME STATISTICS CWL GTRA1st downs 8 15Rushes-yards 36-252 62-464Passes (CAI) 3-9-1 6-8-0Passing yards 18 100Total net yards 270 564Penalties-yards 6-35 8-50Fumbles-lost 1-1 3-2CWL DEFENSIVE STATISTICS Tackles (solo-assist): Josh Hilbert 5-11, Matthew Burrs 1-12, Grant Carroll 4-13, Derek Studer 4-8, Preston Jensen 3-4, Jake Young 4-6, Esden Carroll 4-0, Spencer Thompson 0-4, Jared Haler 3-1, Stefan Chambers 0-3, Chandler Vorland 0-2, Randy Cram 0-2, Johnny Studer 1-0.
