Humboldt Council agrees to engineering services for bridge

The Humboldt City Council on Monday unanimously agreed to a resolution approving a supplement to the professional services agreement with WHKS of Mason City for final design engineering services for the Sumner Avenue Bridge. The work will include a final design of the new Sumner Avenue Bridge and the engineer’s probable cost for construction, as well as the final project review, construction plans and specification. It is assumed that the bridge will consist of five continuous concrete slabs totaling two slabs of 45 feet and three slabs of 58 feet, for a total bridge length of 264 feet. The roadway will be 30-feet, six-inches, and will include two 12-feet traffic lanes with three-feet shoulder areas and a five-foot wide sidewalk with a separation railing on the north side of the bridge. Abutments will be integral or semi-integral on steel H piles, driven into rock. Although no utilities will be hung from the bridge, conduit will be strung where necessary to comply with Iowa Department of Transportation lighting provisions. The Mason City engineering firm will also provide roadway design for the approaches leading to the bridge. The engineering firm also agrees to provide all necessary project management and quality control. The bridge is expected to be built in 2014, and the portion of Sumner Avenue surrounding the bridge will be closed to vehicular and pedestrian traffic during the construction.
