Wildcats top Gilbert to move into 3A substate final

The Humboldt boys basketball team moved into a Class 3A substate tournament final by turning back Gilbert, 63-43 Thursday night (Feb. 27) in the Fort Dodge Senior High gym. The Wildcats outscored the Tigers 19-9 in the final quarter to break the game open. Jaxon Heinz scored 29 points to power Humboldt. Austin Zylstra had nine, Jack Curran eight, Nick Heider seven and Brady Ross six.The Wildcats, now 15-7 on the year, advance within one game of the state tournament. Humboldt will face No. 8 rated Carroll (18-4), which downed Ballard Huxley, 63-43 in the other district final. Humboldt and Carroll will tipoff at 7 p.m. Monday night (Mar. 3) in the Ames High gym.HUMBOLDT RIPS NEVADA IN 3A OPENER, 61-19Humboldt won their Class 3A District Tournament opener Monday night in impressive fashion by rolling past the Nevada Cubs, 61-19 in the Webster City gym. Jack Curran scored 16 points and Jaxon Heinz added 14 to lead the Wildcats, who improved to 14-7 overall. Brady Ross followed with eight points and Austin Zylstra made six. Cole Gidel led Nevada with five points.With the win, the Wildcats advanced into a Thursday night (Feb. 27) district final in the Fort Dodge gym where they met Gilbert, which eliminated Webster City Monday night by a 69-52 final.
