New Sumner Avenue Bridge now open for business
After many delays to due weather, geological borings, the possibility of endangered environmental species and general architectural issues with a multiple span concrete bridge, the new Sumner Avenue Bridge officially reopened for traffic Friday morning. City leaders held a brief ribbon cutting in front of about 40 interested citizens at 8:30 a.m., with cars whizzing buy a few minutes later. That is a scene that hasn’t happened since mid-March 2014, more than 15 months ago. “We have a beautiful bridge that we can be proud of for the next 100 years in our community,” Humboldt Mayor Walter Jensen said before cutting the ribbon. A more formal ceremony dedicating the bridge will be held once the veteran’s memorial overlook is completed.
