WBM/GCB track teams begin this week

Led by senior standout Anna Zaugg, veteran girls track coach Eldon McKimmey, who leads the West Bend-Mallard/Gilmore City-Bradgate Wolverines, is eager to get the new season started. Squad numbers have doubled from a year ago. Led by senior Anna Zaugg and sophomore Emma Thatcher, along with an influx of underclassmen and newcomers, McKimmey is ready to begin the process of putting the pieces of the puzzle together for another season. “We are real young this year. Early in the season I’m not sure where all of the pieces will fit, but I feel we have the potential to do some damage later in the year,” McKimmey said. Zaugg and Thatcher are back to provide leadership. The pair ran on the distane medley relay which placed 11th in last year’s state meet. Zaugg also ran 10th in the 1,500-meters at state. Zaugg has been a state meet performer in each of the past three seasons. With several returning lettermen back on a squad of 11, WBM/GCB boys’ track coach Jerry Vanderhorst is eager to get the 2016 season underway. “It’s a good group. We have three freshmen, two sophomores, four juniors and a couple of seniors. It’s a good mix across the board, but as a coach, you would always like to have more kids out for track,” Vanderhorst said.See full story in this week's Humboldt Independent Newspaper.
