HHS boys’ golf will build around 3 lettermen

Graduation losses have been heavy the last two seasons for the Humboldt High boys’ golf program.
Last year the Wildcats finished sixth in both the conference and sectional tournaments to end their season after placing fourth at state in 2015.
While a rebuilding project is squarely in front of the Wildcats, veteran coach Scott Birdsell is optimistic about the talent he has on hand to begin the process this spring.
“We did lose three seniors from last year’s team. We could count on those guys every time out, but we do have three guys back who lettered in sophomores Jack Arndt and Hudson Gargano and junior Isaac Thurm,” Birdsell said.
Gargano shot a 41 to pace Humboldt in the conference meet. Thurm and Arndt were next, respectively, with 44 and 45. Junior Jacob Nilles shot 46. In its final meet of the season in a sectional at North Polk, Arndt (47-46—93) had the third-best score. Gargano and Thurm each shot 100.
“It was good for those guys to get the experience that they gained all throughout last year. They played in every varsity meet and all the tournaments that we played in. They played in the conference and sectional tournaments. I know they have practiced a lot during the off-season and so we’ll rely heavily on those three guys this year,” Birdsell said.
