After consultations this week, the city of Humboldt and the city of Dakota City will be continuing junk clean up as scheduled during the week of Monday April 20. All junk items should be on the curbside by 6 a.m. on April 20 for Humboldt residents and by 8 a.m. on April 20 for Dakota City residents, even if your garbage collection day is a different day of the week.
There is a limit of one truckload of items per residence. No bags or boxes of junk will be allowed! Any times that can be placed in a blue or yellow garbage bag (for city of Humboldt residents) or normal garbage bag/trash receptacle for the city of Dakota City, should be left in those bags and containers. Items not collected will be waste oil, wire, tires, batteries, items with Freon, paint shingles, construction and demolition materials, railroad ties, concrete, steel and hazardous waste. The junk clean up is for residential customers only.
"We received some calls with concerns, but the junk collection is one of the safer activities for our employees regarding distancing. We've got two guys in dump trucks and one on an end loader," Humboldt City Administrator Travis Goedken said.
Both cities offer stickers for the pick up of TVs, appliances and electronic equipment at a cost of $10 each. With Humboldt City Hall closed for the COVID-19 pandemic, call ahead at (515) 332-3435 if you need a sticker and city staff will collect your money and provide you with a sticker. For Dakota City, call (515) 332-3083 ahead of time and they will get you a sticker for your appliances, TVs and electronic items.
The cities appreciate the public's cooperation in following the rules. Adherence is necessary if citizens want a community junk collection to remain a cost-effective option in the future.
A reminder that Dakota City will accept separate small piles of brush. No brush will be collected in Humboldt. The date for brush collection in the city of Humboldt is the week of Monday, May 4.
The city of Humboldt has set an open burning date of Saturday, April 25 for leaves and lawn and garden waste. The city composting site west of Sister's Home Style plant on 22nd Street North is now open during daylight hours. Dakota City allows open burning year round as weather conditions permit.
