Minutes after the Humboldt City Council accepted a letter of resignation from Humboldt City Administrator Travis Goedken on Monday, the Decorah City Council approved a contract offer to have Goedken serve as that city’s new city manager.
Goedken’s resignation will be effective Thursday, Sept. 9. In his letter of resignation, Goedken said Humboldt has been a great community for him professionally and for his family.
“We have seen several great projects come to fruition over the past several years, that many other communities dream to accomplish. We have forged great relationships that will continue beyond my tenure,” Goedken said in his resignation letter. He said the overriding factor in the decision was family considerations. Goedken grew up near Dubuque, as did his wife, Tara, and said it was a 3-1/2-hour drive to attend a recent event for a niece. “Decorah will be only 1-1/2 hours and one hour to some of our family,” he said.
The Humboldt Council discussed whether or not to hire a search firm or to look for a new city administrator on its own. After a discussion, the council agreed to put out requests for proposals for a search firm with a deadline of Aug. 18-20 for submissions. The Council plans a special meeting for Monday, Aug. 23 to review proposals.
