Wildcats rally past Nevada in battle of unbeatens, 19-15

Caden Matson passed 15 yards to Will Orness with 50 seconds left to rally the No. 4 ranked Humboldt football team to a thrilling, 19-15 victory over the Nevada Cubs Friday night (Oct. 15) in a battle of Class 3A District 2 unbeatens. The triumph clinched the district title and a playoff berth.
The victory improved Humboldt to 8-0 overall, 4-0 in district play. Nevada, ranked No. 7, slipped to 7-1 overall, 3-1 in district play.
Humboldt can win the district outright next week (Oct. 22) by beating Algona in a regular season finale at Mason Maach Field in Humboldt.
Humboldt trailed 7-6 at halftime. Their only score in the first half was a seven-yard touchdown run by Lance Coon. The PAT kick was no good.
Humboldt took a 12-7 lead at 4:12 in the third quarter on a four-yard TD run by Matson.
Nevada regained the lead at 7:27 in the fourth quarter on a three-yard TD run by James Edwards.
Humboldt marched 86 yards in 11 plays to manufacture its final scoring drive, then held off the Cubs on Nevada's final series as the clock expired. Matson was 9 of 19 in passing for 117 yards. He also rushed for 196 yards on 24 carries. Orness caught 8 passes for 109 yards. Nolan Lammers led the defense with nine tackles.
