Humboldt boys pull away in 4th quarter, top Sioux Center, 81-67

Humboldt held off a second half comeback by Sioux Center and pulled away in the final quarter for an 81-67 victory over the Warriors in a boys' Class 3A quarterfinal round substate tournament game in the Humboldt gym Monday night (Feb. 21).
Caden Matson scored 22 points, Josh Thurm had 19 and Will Orness made 14 for the Wildcats, who improved to 19-3 overall.
Sioux Center, which ends its season at 10-12, was paced by Carson Bruhn and Kylar Fritz each with 18 points. Christian Vietor added 17.
Humboldt led by 19 points at halftime, 44-25, but saw their lead dwindle to two points late in the third quarter as the Wildcats led just 51-46 going into the fourth quarter. Humboldt pulled away down the stretch and used free throw opportunities to widen their lead in the final two minutes.
Humboldt will host LeMars on Thursday, Feb. 24, in the Humboldt gym. LeMars defeated Sergeant Bluff-Luton Monday night in LeMars, 54-47. The other half of the substate saw Storm Lake edge MOC-Floyd Valley, 64-63. Spencer beat Algona, 78-45. Spencer and Storm Lake will meet Thursday night in Spencer.
