Humboldt girls’ wrestling coach Andy Newell says it’s an exciting time in Humboldt wrestling right now.
Newell, who completed his first season as the head coach of the girls’ program, presented various awards in last week’s team banquet on March 14 that recognized the 2021-22 season and looked ahead to next year and beyond.
“I want to thank everyone for making girls’ wrestling successful here at Humboldt,” Newell said.
“A special thanks to coach Luke Satern for stepping up in a big way and helped coach the girls at the high school state tournament in January and continued to coach the AAU. He has offered to coach open mat during the spring and summer, in freestyle and folkstyle to help the girls get better,” Newell said.
“I want to thank the girls for your dedication to the sport of wrestling. It’s not an easy sport being the only one out there. It’s just you and the other person out there on the mat,” Newell said. “That takes a lot of courage and heart to step up and do that.”
Senior two-time state place winner Maria Elizondo won four awards, including Most Outstanding Wrestler.
