The second annual Cy-Hawk Rivalry on Sumner Avenue is only one week away.
This year’s event will be Thursday, Sept. 8, from 4-10 p.m. on Sumner Avenue.
While the Cy-Hawk Rivalry has been going on several years and at least four times in conjunction with WHO’s RVTV, this is the second year the Humboldt Athletic Booster Club has sponsored the event as a club fundraiser.
Some fundraising has already been going on this summer. The Athletic Boosters held a golf tournament earlier this year and just completed a Wildcat apparel sales drive.
“We have started yard signs with Iowa State or Iowa logos on Aug. 29. For this week and next week, people can have someone’s yard Hawked or Cloned and then they have to pay to have the signs removed. It’s a fun thing that gets people fired up to root for their favorite school,” Booster Club member Cassie Harklau said.
People can Venmo or scan the QR code on the Booster Club’s poster, or call Harklau at (515) 368-2711.
There will be a 50/50 raffle held. Booster Club members are currently selling tickets at $5 each or five tickets for $20. People need to be present to win to receive half of the cash.
The raffle drawing will take place at 6:30 p.m. that evening, right before the live auction.
“We’ve got some nice items. We have a chain saw and a Blackstone grill to auction off. We’ve got some bag sets and the metal bin containers with the Iowa and Iowa State logos are popular,” Harklau said.
Sumner Avenue will be closed between 6th and 8th Streets during the event. There will also be some activities on the side streets.
There will be kids’ games from 4-7 p.m.
A big hit with the kids and young adults is the Iowa National Guard rock climbing wall and inflatables.
“They are super great to work with and we have had good support from local businesses in paying for the kids’ games portion,” Harklau said.
Some activities were being finalized at press time. A bouncy house and a foam party are possibilities.
A popular activity for adults is the corn hole tournament. To encourage more participation and reserve your space advanced registration is going on now. Contact Booster Club member Sarah Dieleman at dieleman.sarah@gmail.com and sign up your two-person team today. There will also be sign-up the day of the event at 4:30 p.m., with the tournament starting at 5:30 p.m.
There will be a local celebrity dunk tank, so come show your throwing arm and dunk your favorite celebrity.
What would a rivalry be without a contest of skill. This year’s event will be a Celebrity Minute-To-Win-It game at 6 p.m. One team member for both the Hawks and the ‘Clones will be selected from the raffle names at the start of the competition. There will be two team captains for both Iowa and Iowa State in the game.
KHBT will be broadcasting live from 4-7 p.m. and playing music.
The band Salty View from Fort Dodge will make a return to the Cy-Hawk Rivalry event. The talented trio will perform from 7-10 p.m. on Sumner. The group is fresh off its opening act performance for Bailey Zimmerman at the Chords in the Corn concert at the Iowa Dragway. The band plays a wide selection of popular music.
There will be several food vendors. While details are still being finalized, The Athletic Booster Club will be serving pork burgers, chips and water for a freewill donation.
Burrito Mexpress will be having a trailer and Dean Potraz will be there with his kettle korn and snow cones.
There will be a beverage garden for those 21 and older.
People wanting more information may contact Harklau at the number listed, or Dieleman at (641) 230-1203.
