No matter musical taste, something for everyone this weekend in Humboldt/DC
No matter your musical taste, there is something for everyone in Humboldt County this weekend.
The 32nd annual Midwest Polka Fest, the festival with the personal touch, will once again be coming to Humboldt for a two-day celebration, Labor Day weekend, Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 3-4. For the second year in a row, the location will be the VFW Hall in Dakota City, 412 Main St. Music and dancing will be from 12-8 p.m. both days. Admission is $15 per day. There will be a variety and food and beverages available and the VFW full breakfast will be on the griddle Sunday from 8-11 a.m. People do not have to be part of Polka Fest to enjoy breakfast.
On down the road, at Lower Sheldon Park, will be the 14th annual Rock 'N' Picnic Labor Day weekend, Saturday, Sept. 3 and Sunday, Sept. 4. It's local and it's free. It’s a family-friendly event and people are invited to bring lawn chairs and coolers. There is camping available by contacting Humboldt County Conservation. Regular park rates apply.
Saturday night is country music night with performances from the Elias Netz Band and the Craig Gerdes Band. There will be a shrimp boil starting around 5 p.m. Saturday for a freewill donation and live country music thereafter.
Sunday is for those about to rock. Performers will include Will Shekey and Company from Humboldt, Midland Vibe of Algona, Clint Riedel, Vinny and the Night Prowlers from Cedar Rapids, Zach Suntken of Humboldt, the Jeremy Dewall Band from Minnesota and other special guests and performers.
“We pretty much have music going on non-stop from 1 p.m. to 11 p.m. on Sunday,” organizer Paul Larson said.
There will be a barbecue meat supper offered Sunday night for a freewill donation. The headline band will be Eliminator, a ZZ Top tribute band out of Chicago, IL. They will take the stage Sunday night around 8 p.m.
Regardless of musical taste, it is going to be a fun weekend in Humboldt and Dakota City. Read more about it in this week's Humboldt Independent and the September edition of the Humboldt NOW! magazine, which features a retrospective of 13 years of Rock 'N' Picnics with lots of photos.
