Top-ranked Humboldt holds off North Polk in 3A-2 clash, 24-14

Top-ranked Humboldt remains unbeaten on the season after the Wildcats held off the North Polk Comets, 24-14 in a Class 3A District 2 clash at Mason Maach Field in Humboldt.

The Wildcats, 6-0 overall, 2-0 in district play, got touchdown runs from Lance Coon (4 yards) and quarterback Will Orness (8 yards). Orness also connected with Corey Dettmann for a 12-yard touchdown pass. Wildcat senior Trever Beach kicked a 40-yard field goal as time expired in the first half to give the Wildcats a 10-7 halftime lead.

Orness totaled 110 yards rushing and Coon had 119 yards to lead the Humboldt offense.

The Wildcat defense was led by 6-5, 330-pound senior nose guard Josh Belgian with five solo tackles and three assists. Owen Hubbell had three solo tackles and two assists. Gaige Allen made two solo tackles and three assists. Dettmann had four solo tackles.

Humboldt will host Gilbert on Oct. 7 in their final home game of the regular season. The Wildcats close out their regular season with road games at Nevada (Oct. 14) and at Algona (Oct. 21).
