Humboldt whips Algona, 31-8; host HDC in state playoff opener

Lance Coon rushed for 206 yards and scored four touchdowns, all in the first half, to power the Humboldt Wildcat football team to a dominating 31-8 victory over the Algona Bulldogs Friday night (Oct. 21) in Algona in a regular season final for both schools.

The victory improved Humboldt to 8-1 overall, 4-1 in Class 3A District 2. A win by North Polk over Nevada created a 3-way tie for the district title.

Coon scored on runs of 18, 4, 49 and 5 yards as Humboldt took a 28-8 halftime lead.

Trever Beach kicked a 40-yard field goal early in the second half to make it 31-8.

Will Orness completed 6 of 11 passes for 89 yards. Owen Hubbell led the Humboldt defense with 5 solo tackles and 6 assists. Beach and 4 solos and 4 assists. Tayeton Lohaus had 3 sacks on defense.

Playoff action begins on Friday, Oct. 28. Humboldt hosts Hampton Dumont CAL at 7 p.m. at Mason Maach Field.
