Wildcat girls bow in opening day at state wrestling

Humboldt's four-girl contingent all saw their seasons come to an end after day one of the state wrestling tournament at Xtream Arena in Coralville on Feb. 2.

Humboldt's Baylie Beers at 130 and Sophia Harris at 110 both won their first round matches.

Beers, seeded No. 12, pinned Danyka Peterson of Sioux City North in 3:33 to advance on the winner side. Beers then faced No. 5 seed Colbie Tenborg (23-0) of Saydel and lost by fall in 1:51. Beers met Becca Hinderaker of Tipton and lost by medical forfeit. Her senior year ended with a record of 23-7.

Harris, seeded No. 16, pinned No. 17 Josie Lennon of Sergeant Bluff-Luton in 5:43 in their first round match. Harris went on and lost by fall in 21 seconds to No. 1 seed Jalynn Goodale of Osage 31-0. Harris pinned Riley Rice of WACO in the consolation round. She was eliminated from the tournament when she lost by fall in 3:40 to Kate Seery of LIMA. Harris finishes her junior year at 24-12.

Humboldt's Claire Weydert, a No. 32 seed, was pinned by defending state champion and No. 1 seed Alexis Ross of Fort Dodge in 1:36. Weydert faced Maggie Wagner of Anamosa in the consolation side and lost by fall in 2:38 to see her season come to an end. She finishes 17-18.

Humboldt sophomore 190-pounder Brooklyn Robinson, No. 17 seed, met No. 16 Chloe Heefner of Cedar Rapids Prairie in a first round match and was pinned by Heefner in 2:42. Robinson moved into the consolation round to face Clinton freshman Arie Russell (10-9). Russell won by fall in 22 seconds to end Robinson's season at 22-14.
