Ryan O’Hern is looking forward to returning to north central Iowa.

O’Hern, an Eagle Grove native and currently teaching and coaching in the West Burlington School District in southeast Iowa, will begin his duties here on July 1. He’ll replace Greg Thomas, who is stepping down from his position at the end of the school year.

“I am humbled, appreciative and thankful for the opportunity to take over as the next Humboldt activities director. I know there will be big holes to fill with Greg Thomas retiring,” O’Hern told the Independent in an interview on Feb. 21. His hiring was approved by the Humboldt Board of Education in their Feb. 20 meeting.

“I’m looking forward to working with the athletic booster club at Humboldt, as well as the other clubs and fine arts activities. My mom was a long-time art teacher. Down here at West Burlington I have been able to experience one of the best elementary music teachers in the state, as far as helping him out with his concerts. I have a lot of respect for the music side. I’m for all activities.”
