It may not be back by popular demand, but when the COVID-19 pandemic hit in 2020, the Humboldt High School Drama Department already had a great play in mind. Game of Tiaras, a send up of Game of Thrones, Shakespeare and some good-natured poking at the world’s favorite fairly tale creator on the big screen.

Fast-forward four school years and some of the students who were cast in the 2020 production are now re-cast in lead roles in the 2023 version of the play, written by Don Zolidis.

When the aging king of a Magical Kingdom (England) decides to split his empire between his three daughters, Cinderella, Belle, and the Snow Queen (who in no way resembles a copyrighted character), terrible tragedy ensues. Terrible, hilarious tragedy. Combining the gut-wrenching plot twists of Game of Thrones and the soul-numbing despair of Shakespearean tragedy, this adaptation of King Lear will leave you dying with laughter as the body count mounts. When you play the Game of Tiaras, you win or you die.

Emily Wiebke is directing this farcical comedy, which will be performed this Friday and Saturday, March 24 and 25, at 7 p.m. at the R. Welsey Carlson Auditorium. Tickets are $6 for adults and $3 for students and are available at the high school office prior to the weekend shows, or at the door the night of the performance.

The cast has been rehearsing since Jan. 30. There is music and there will be a Red Ball and swords with wolf heads. There is a lot of inuendo, so the crowd should be prepared for laughs and good evening at the theater, although it won’t be a good evening for the characters!
