WILDCATS HAVE HIGH EXPECTATIONS THIS SEASON

Led by Carson Arndt’s 42, the Humboldt boys’ golf team opened their season with a victory over Spencer and Bishop Garrigan of Algona last week (April 3) at Spring Valley Golf Course north of Livermore.
Humboldt finished with 175, Spencer shot 176 and Garrigan totaled 198. Kaden Miller led Spencer with a 40 while Ethan Kuper’s 43 paced Garrigan.
Humboldt also had Corey Dettmann and Parker Sleiter each with a 44 while Ty Gargano shot a 45.

SEASON PREVIEW

Humboldt head boys’ golf coach Scott Birdsell and his team are using last year’s finish as a motivating factor going into the new season.

Birdsell, who begins his 15th season as head coach, brings in a veteran team with six lettermen who have their sights set on a North Central Conference championship and a trip to the Class 3A state tournament.

Last year Clear Lake edged Humboldt by one stroke in the conference tournament. Humboldt was also third in the NCC standings in a tight race. Their season ended with a fifth-place finish in sectionals.

“We’ve got 25 out this year. Six letterwinners back from last year. We are expecting some big things this year,” Birdsell said. “Last year we finished third in the conference duals. We had a couple of duals where we didn’t play well. That is still stuck in the back of our heads. And we finished second in the conference tournament at Fort Dodge, where we got edged out by Clear Lake by one stroke,” Birdsell said.

“When you have this many guys back, basically everyone back except for the lone senior we graduated last year in Hayden Holm, we have some high expectations for this season,” Birdsell said.
