Humboldt boys edge Lions in key NCC golf meet

Humboldt’s varsity boys’ golf team took one step toward winning the North Central Conference dual title by edging Clear Lake and Algona in a key triangular meet at Humboldt Country Club on April 25.

The Wildcats and the Lions both finished with 166 strokes but Humboldt won via the tie-breaker as the Wildcats’ fifth-best score of 43 was one lower than the 44 by the Lions’ number five golfer. Algona finished with 187.

Senior Jayden Gargano fired a 40 to pace Humboldt. He was backed by Carson Arndt with 41 and Carson Sleiter at 42. Ty Gargano and Parker Sleiter each shot a 43 and Corey Dettmann fired a 45.

Humboldt moved to 5-0 in conference dual play by beating Iowa Falls-Alden in Humboldt on April 28. Corey Dettmann shot a 38 and Carson Sleiter had a 39 to lead Humboldt, which totaled 157 strokes. IFA shot 186 and was led by Cal Kalous with 41.

Humboldt visits Webster City on May 2 for an NCC triangular which includes Fort Dodge St. Edmond.

The Wildcats will be in the Carroll Kuemper tournament on Saturday, May 6.

The North Central Conference meet is Monday, May 8, at Livermore.

Class 3A sectional tournament play will be on Tuesday, May 9, at Spencer.
