Spring clean-up and hazardous materials drop off

It’s spring and people are thinking about cleaning up their homes and properties. The cities of Humboldt and Dakota City are doing something to aid in the effort.
Due to the burn ban and weather conditions on Saturday April 15, the city of Humboldt did not have an open burning day. The burn ban has been lifted and the city will schedule an open burning day for a Saturday in May. Details will be announced.

Humboldt Junk Day
Junk day for the city of Humboldt begins Monday, May 1. All items should be curbside by 6 a.m. that week. All appropriate items will be collected by Friday, May 5. There is a limit of one truckload per household.
Items that can be placed in regular trash bags should be disposed of in that manner. They must have the city orange sticky tag around them and will be picked up during the regular garbage route that week.
Items that are not acceptable and will not be collected are waste oil, wire, tires, batteries, items that contain Freon, paint, shingles, cement, steel construction, demolition materials and hazardous waste. These items will be left curbside and must be removed by the property owner or face a municipal citation.
The city of Humboldt will be having a hazardous materials pick up day on Wednesday, May 3 from 8 a.m. to noon at Heinz Field.
Unauthorized hauling of appliances or electronics by private individuals will be prosecuted by local and state law, as the handling and processing of such items is strictly regulated by the Iowa Department of Natural Resources.
People may stop by Humboldt City Hall this week to purchase stickers for electronics and appliances at a cost of $10 per sticker.

Dakota City
The city of Dakota City allows controlled open burning throughout the year.
The city will also be having its junk and brush pick up beginning Monday, May 1. All junk and brush should be in separate piles and be curbside by 8 a.m.
The same rules apply for items not collected as the city of Humboldt. Household bags of trash will not be collected as part of the city of Dakota City junk collection.
TVs, computers, household appliances and other electronic equipment must have a sticker on them to be picked up. Stickers are available at Dakota City Hall, 26 5th St. S., Monday-Friday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. The cost is $10 per sticker.
There is a limit of one truckload per household.
