108-year-old home gets high intensity facelift

Ryan Lovan, left, The Energy Group, Des Moines, demonstrated how a blower door test can help energy raters calculate air leakage in a home, affecting energy use and costs. Lovan showed the test process to students from the Humboldt High School Building Trades class in the home that they renovated over this past school year, located at 310 South 6th St. S., Humboldt. Humboldt High School’s building trades program has offered students an opportunity for hands-on education in residential home construction. Students received a full school year of practical experience learning about construction, building science, and decision-making while gaining real-world job skills.
Thirteen high school graduating seniors, along with instructor, Dan Oswald, recently completed their work on the building trades home for the 2022-2023 school year.
This school year’s project, a 1925-vintage renovated single-family home, located at 310 6th Street South, Humboldt, is being recognized for its energy efficiency features.
