HCMH receives grant for sunscreen

It is estimated that there will be approximately 97,610 new cases of skin cancer diagnosed in 2023. While the survival rate for skin cancer is high, up to 99 percent if caught early, almost 8,000 people are expected to die from the condition this year according to the National Cancer Institute.
Christen Sewell, director of Humboldt Public Health, hopes to provide Humboldt residents with the tools to decrease their odds of getting skin cancer.
The Iowa Cancer Consortium offered a grant program to its members this summer to attempt to lower those statistics in the future.
“We were able to donate a gallon to the Humboldt Aquatic Center, a gallon to Heinz Youth Complex and then we kept one to use during events such as the track and field days, the golf outing and the Humota fundraiser,” Sewell said.
